The Hazards of Traditional Anti Corrosion VCI Bags

Corrosion is an unforgiving and costly enemy of metal packaging. Corrosion prevention methods using traditional Vapor Corrosion Inhibitors (VCIs) are both costly and hazardous to operations personnel and the environment. To illustrate these problems with traditional Anti Corrosion VCI Bags, it is important first to understand how VCIs are typically used. VCI chemicals are inserted into coatings, adhesives, plastics, and metals to provide corrosion protection during packaging and shipment. Corrosion begins when an electrolyte (water, oxygen, humidity) is present on the surface of a metal. The corrosion process results in the formation of oxidation on the metal surface.

When metals are packaged using traditional VCI methods, many of these products emit volatile organic compounds (VOCs) that are in some cases toxic smog components. They also contain the preservatives sodium nitrite, sodium molybdate, BHA, and BH—and in many cases, carcinogenic nitrosamines are found in VCI packaging products.

A Breakthrough Solution for Corrosion Prevention

Solvent Recycling Systems (SRS) uses Cortec’s Vapor Phase Corrosion Inhibitor (VpCI®) technology, which protects metals with a chemically adsorbed molecular layer. Vapor phase corrosion inhibitors, known as VpCIs, protect multi-metals in enclosed environments in a more sustainable way. The VpCI® molecules diffuse from areas of high concentration to low concentration reaching all areas of the enclosure. VpCI® molecules can go wherever oxygen molecules can go, making VpCIs an effective protection method for hard-to-reach areas such as crevices, cavities, and other inaccessible areas. The VpCI® barrier is self-replenishing, even for packaging that’s repeatedly opened, and typically protects for up to 24 months.

SRS’ VCI bags offer exceptional product protection without the labor-intensive clean-up required with conventional oil coatings or other inhibiting products – even for previously corroded, painted, or coated surfaces. Cortec® VpCIs are environmentally safe, not based on nitrites, and provide the safety net your products and systems deserve.

What VpCI Anti-Corrosion Protection Means:

  • No surface preparation required for application
  • No cleaning/degreasing required for product use
  • Eliminates hazardous waste disposal costs
  • Reduce need for oil and raw materials – desiccants are eliminated
