Parts Washing & Drying for Heat Treating — Furnace-Ready, Every Cycle

Anything that goes into a heat-treat furnace dirty comes out worse. Oils, chips, and coolant residue burn onto the surface. Water left from washing flashes into spots and stains. Either way, parts come out discolored — and discolored parts mean rework, scrap, and an argument with QA.

That’s why pre-heat-treat cleaning isn’t just washing — it’s a four-stage process: wash, rinse, air-knife, dry. The part that enters the furnace has to be chemically clean and completely dry, every cycle, at production pace.

In service: an in-house heat-treat operation

Before, this shop was cleaning workholding equipment in an ultrasonic unit — and it wasn’t getting the job done. Parts came out of the tank still dirty and still wet, which meant every part got hand-wiped clean and hand-dried before it could go anywhere near the furnace. That’s labor pulled off the floor for every single load, and it wasn’t even reliable: parts that weren’t wiped thoroughly enough were still showing up discolored after heat treat, turning into rejections.

In June 2025 we replaced that process with a Magido L153 — a fully configured wash/rinse/blow-off/dry system built on Magido’s top-load platform, sized to a 40" (1100mm) load height. Twin upgraded high-pressure pumps run the wash and rinse stages at 80 PSI, a 2.2 kW fan-blower blow-off stage shears standing water out of pockets and fixture details, and a 9 kW electric heater dryer finishes parts bone-dry — no towel, no tech standing at a sink. An oil skimmer keeps tramp oil out of the wash tank, a stainless in-line filter keeps the spray clean, and a steam condenser keeps the shop floor from fogging up. Auto-fill and a programmable 24/7 heater timer mean it’s ready for the first load of the shift with no warm-up.

The result: the manual wipe-and-dry step is gone, parts come out of the machine actually clean and actually dry, and furnace rejections from discoloration have dropped since the ultrasonic unit came out of the process.

Why the four stages matter

Wash — heated aqueous cycle strips oils, coolant, and chips that would burn onto the part at temperature.

Rinse — a dedicated rinse stage (separate tank, clean water) removes detergent residue that would otherwise stain at furnace temp.

Air-knife — high-velocity air shears standing water out of pockets, bores, and threads — the places drying misses and discoloration starts.

Dry — parts exit dry to the touch and furnace-ready. No flash rusting on the cart, no spotting in the furnace.

Who this is for

  • Shops stuck hand-wiping parts dry after ultrasonic cleaning — ultrasonic tanks clean, but they don’t dry, and standard fixture geometry (pockets, threaded holes) traps water. If your process still ends with someone at a sink with a rag before parts go in the furnace, that step can go away.
  • Manufacturers bringing heat treat in-house — if you’re installing a furnace, the cleaning line ahead of it decides your scrap rate.
  • Commercial heat treaters — consistent incoming-part cleanliness regardless of what condition customers ship parts in.
