Nitrogen blanketing works. That is not the argument against it. The argument against it is everything you have to do to keep it working, and what happens in a confined space when it fails quietly.

Cortec® put out a release on September 25 making the case for waterborne VpCI® fogging as the replacement, with two field applications behind it. We stock VpCI-337 in Illinois, so here is the practical version.

What you are actually paying for with nitrogen

An inert gas blanket protects by displacement. Keep oxygen out of the void and corrosion stops. To do that you need the gas, the regulators and the plumbing to deliver it, a way to hold positive pressure on an enclosure that was never built to be gas-tight, and somebody checking it for as long as the equipment sits. Three of those four are recurring costs. The fourth is the one that matters most: an enclosure purged of oxygen is an asphyxiation hazard, and nitrogen gives no warning — no smell, no irritation, no sense of breathlessness before someone goes down. Confined-space entry procedures exist because of exactly this.

Vapor phase corrosion inhibitors work on a different principle. Instead of removing the oxygen, they put a molecular layer on the metal so the oxygen has nothing to react with. Fog the inhibitor into the void, close it up, and the protection is in place. There is no pressure to hold, nothing to top off, and nothing to monitor. The enclosure only has to be reasonably closed, not gas-tight.

Where this is being used

Cortec’s release names two applications. On an LNG project in Malaysia, fogged VpCI-337 delivered 24 months of corrosion protection with no nitrogen system to maintain over that period. At South Humber Bank Power Station in the UK, the product was fogged into two heat recovery steam generators during a cold-weather shutdown.

The HRSG case is the one worth dwelling on, because an HRSG is close to a worst case for any preservation method. It is enormous, it is full of tube bundles and headers and dead legs, and you cannot see most of it. A fogged inhibitor reaches those spaces because vapor does not need line of sight. That same property is why this method suits tanks, process vessels, long piping runs, inlet header boxes, double-wall void spaces and export shipping packaging — anywhere the geometry defeats a coating you have to physically apply to a surface.

VpCI-337 protects steel, aluminum, cast iron, copper and brass, so a mixed-metal system does not need a second product. There is also a Winterized grade rated down to -40 °F, which is the one to specify for an outdoor shutdown in a Midwest winter. We do not currently list the Winterized grade on the site — ask and we will quote it.

What it does not replace

Fogging is for enclosed void spaces you are leaving idle. It is not a coating, and it will not help an exterior surface exposed to weather. If the equipment sitting idle is a boiler rather than a vessel, the choice between fogging, a dry layup bag and a wet layup dose is a separate decision — we worked through the fogging dose for that case in VpCI-337 fogging dose for boiler layup, and the dry-bag route in how to apply Boiler Lizard. If you are filling the system with water rather than emptying it, the product changes again.

One practical note on sequencing. If the shutdown is also when the vessel gets opened up, blasted and recoated, the preservation step goes last, after the coating work is done and before the enclosure is closed. Plants that fog first and then send a crew back in have wasted the treatment. Worth putting in the outage sequence on paper rather than leaving it to the day.

Which products

If you are budgeting a shutdown

The comparison worth running is not the price of the inhibitor against the price of the nitrogen. It is the inhibitor against the nitrogen plus the regulators plus the labor to monitor it plus the confined-space procedure you have to maintain for as long as the asset sits. That arithmetic usually settles it, and it is a five-minute conversation. Get in touch with what you are laying up, the internal volume, and how long it will sit.
