Description

A blast room (also called a sandblast booth or abrasive blast room) is a fully enclosed, ventilated workspace where operators can blast large parts, weldments, and fabrications that don’t fit in a sandblasting cabinet. What’s Included in a Complete Blast Room

A working blast room is a system, not just an enclosure. Every Kresco blast room package covers all six elements:

  • Modular enclosure — bolt-together 14-gauge galvanized steel panels with structural beams sized to your room dimensions and load (strong enough to support lifting equipment). Natural galvanized or powder-coated finish.
  • Abrasive media recovery system — pneumatic, mechanical, or hybrid floor recovery that returns spent media to the blast pot (see options below).
  • Dust collection — reverse-pulse cartridge dust collector capturing 99.9% of particles 5 µm and smaller, with automated filter cleaning, keeping visibility high inside the room and emissions controlled.
  • Pressure blasting equipment — pressure blasters and media storage hoppers in configurations supplying up to four simultaneous blast operators.
  • Operator safety equipment — personnel doors with observation windows (36″ x 84″ standard), door safety switches, emergency stops, and supplied-air respiratory protection with air filtration and gas detection.
  • Controls & lighting — PLC control with HMI touch screen and built-in maintenance alerts; 18,000-lumen LED Hi-Bay lighting serviceable by a single technician.

Enclosure, Doors & Room Sizes

Blast rooms are sized to your parts, not the other way around. The modular panel system means the enclosure is engineered to your dimensions — from compact single-operator rooms to drive-through rooms for trailers, dump bodies, and structural steel. Door options include standard access doors, bifold and trifold doors for tight floor plans, heavy-duty rubber roll-up doors for fast cycle times, and doors on both ends for a true drive-thru workflow. Interior rubber lining, overhead monorail part handling, and removable flooring for heavy parts are available options.

Ventilation & Dust Collection

Proper airflow is what separates a productive blast room from a dust cave. Each room is ventilated through a reverse-pulse cartridge dust collector sized for the room volume, maintaining operator visibility during blasting and filtering exhaust air to 99.9% at 5 µm. Automated pulse cleaning keeps cartridges working between filter changes, and the PLC flags maintenance before performance drops.

Blast room or blast cabinet — which do I need?

If your parts fit through a cabinet opening and one operator can handle them, a sandblast cabinet is faster and cheaper. When parts are measured in feet instead of inches — frames, weldments, tanks, wheels sets, structural steel — you need a walk-in blast room.

Can a blast room be installed without digging a pit?

Yes. Pneumatic recovery floors and the mechanical loading recovery system are designed for above-slab installation where excavation isn’t possible or economical. Full mechanical screw-conveyor floors typically use a shallow pit and earn their keep in high-volume operations.

What abrasive media can I use?

Steel shot and grit, aluminum oxide, glass bead, garnet, plastic media, and other recyclable abrasives — the recovery system and dust collector are specced to your media. Recyclable media plus a recovery floor is what makes a blast room dramatically cheaper to run per hour than open blasting.

Do you install and service blast rooms?

Engineering the Room Around Your Parts

Every Kresco blast room starts with a modular enclosure of 14-gauge galvanized steel panels (10-gauge optional) that assembles quickly in pre-engineered sizes or fully custom dimensions. High-efficiency LED lighting keeps the work surface bright, and the product access door comes as a single door, bifold, or roll-up to match how your parts move — forklift, cart, monorail or drive-in. Optional powder-coat finish and rubber lining protect the enclosure in aggressive steel-grit service.

Recovery Floor Layouts & Rates

The recovery floor is where the budget is won or lost, so Kresco offers six standard layouts — from a single pit up to full-floor coverage that eliminates sweeping entirely. Excavated pits carry grating rated up to 5,000 lb bearing capacity, so wheeled loads roll right over the recovery zone.

Matching the recovery system to your media and volume: the pneumatic system (7.5 hp / 900 CFM cartridge dust collector, urethane piping) recovers up to 2,000 lb/hr and suits most recyclable media except heavy steel grit (GH-36) and large steel shot (S-230+). The mechanical system — excavated endless-screw conveyors feeding a bucket elevator with adjustable airwash cleaning — handles any media at up to 10,000 lb/hr and supplies up to four blasters at once. The hybrid system pairs an excavated auger with vacuum transfer for heavy-duty duty where excavation is limited or ceilings are under the ~20 ft a bucket elevator needs, recovering up to 2,000 lb/hr.

Inside the Cyclonic Separator

An adjustable air inlet tunes the separator to your media type; dust and fines are pulled to the dust collector, large debris drops into a trap drawer, and only good, reusable abrasive returns to the blast pot — which is why operators see better inside the room and consumable spend drops from day one.

Smart Controls & Operator Options

Systems run on a PLC with a 7″ HMI touchscreen: fully automatic mode, integrated maintenance alerts, alarms with resolutions, and hour/wear counters, available in any plant electrical configuration. Popular productivity and safety options include movable floors and overhead conveyors for parts handling, in-booth remote switches (blast on/air only, pressurize/depressurize the vessel — no leaving the room or pulling PPE to adjust), door safety switches, emergency pull cords and exit lights.
