A blast room is a handful of simple machines that wear in predictable ways: rubber lining, hose, nozzles, bearings, filters. Almost every unplanned shutdown we see traces back to one of them being skipped for a few months. Below is the complete preventive maintenance schedule for a Kresco blast room — the booth itself, the blast pot and hose, the media reclaim system (screw conveyor and bucket elevator), and the dust collector — with Kresco part numbers so you can order the wear items before they fail. Print it and hang it on the booth door.
Replacement parts for everything below are stocked or drop-shipped by Solvent Recycling Systems. Send us the part number or call (847) 833-7010.
1. Booth structure
Weekly
- Rubber lining — inspect walls and door panels for wear or detachment; replace worn sections before the panel behind them starts to erode.
- Lighting — clean the Lexan light covers; replace when pitted so lux inside the room stays up.
- Personnel door — clean the Lexan window; confirm the door seal is airtight (a leaking seal pulls room air past the operator and lets dust out).
| Replace when needed | Kresco part # |
|---|---|
| Rubber lining (sold by square foot) | 618330 |
| Door safety switch | 917586 |
| Lexan cover for light | D900183S02 |
| LED light fixture | 617193 |
| Lexan door window | 613032 |
| Personnel door seal, 1¾” × 5/8″ (12.5 ft) | 618438 |
| Main door seal, 1¼” × 7/8″ (45 ft) | 618349 |
2. Blast pot, hose and nozzle
Daily
- Inspect the operator’s PPE — helmet, lens, cape, gloves, breathing-air hose. Service or replace.
- Lay the blast hose out without overlaps or tight bends; kinks wear through from the inside.
Weekly
- Inspect and service the remote-control (deadman) handle and its twin-line hose.
- Inspect the nozzle (see the drill-bit test below).
- Inspect the whip hose — the last section at the nozzle. Its wall is thinner for handling and it wears out first; replace at the first sign of a soft spot.
Monthly
- Inspect the full blast hose, couplings and coupling gaskets for soft spots, cuts and premature wear.
- Inspect the breathing-air supply hose, couplings and gaskets the same way.
The drill-bit nozzle test
Take a drill bit 1/16″ larger than the nozzle’s original bore. If it slides through, the nozzle is worn out. A 5/16″ nozzle is tested with a 3/8″ bit. Handle nozzles with care — a dropped boron carbide or tungsten carbide liner can crack and fail without warning.
Why it matters: in a pressure system, air consumption roughly doubles every time the bore grows by 1/16″. A worn nozzle quietly eats compressor capacity and drops nozzle pressure — which is why production “slows down for no reason” three months after a nozzle change.
| Nozzle bore | Pressure system CFM @ 100 PSI | Compressor HP | Suction system CFM @ 100 PSI | Compressor HP |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1/4″ | 81 | 20 | 26 | 6.5 |
| 5/16″ | 137 | 35 | 42 | 10 |
| 3/8″ | 196 | 50 | 58 | 15 |
| 7/16″ | 254 | 65 | 80 | 20 |
3. Media reclaim: screw conveyor
Mechanical-recovery rooms move spent abrasive through 6″ longitudinal screws under the floor to a 9″ transverse screw, then up a bucket elevator. The screws and their bearings are the parts most often neglected because they’re under the grating.
Monthly
- Lubricate the flange-mount ball bearings and the thrust roller bearings at the drive end (type and quantity per the nameplate).
- Empty the debris basket in the rotary perforated screen drum — this is where bolts, slag and paint chips that didn’t belong in the room end up.
Every 6 months
- Inspect each hanger bearing and coupling shaft along the screws. Both are self-lubricating cast-iron, oil-impregnated parts and need no grease, but they do wear: replace at the first sign of wear or a repetitive screeching noise.
Every 2,000 hours
- Change the gear-motor oil (type and volume on the nameplate).
Hanger bearing replacement: remove the holding plate and J-brackets, remove the split hanger bearing, clean the coupling shaft with fine emery cloth, fit a new bearing. Use only original Martin cast-iron oil-impregnated bearings. The coupling shaft only needs replacing if it shows wear.
| Screw conveyor part | Kresco part # |
|---|---|
| Gear motor 2 HP / 480 V | 916555 |
| Gear motor 2 HP / 600 V | 916556 |
| Flange-mount ball bearing | 900406 |
| Thrust roller bearing | 916557 |
| Hanger bearing (6″ and 9″ screw) | 919729 |
| Hanger bearing support, 6″ screw | 900407 |
| Hanger bearing support, 9″ screw | 900407A |
| Coupling shaft | 900404 |
4. Media reclaim: bucket elevator
The elevator lifts media from the transverse screw to the air-wash separator and storage hopper above the blast pot. It has one adjustment that matters: belt tension.
One month after start-up — tension the rubber belt. Turn the adjustment screw clockwise to tighten, counter-clockwise to loosen; tension must be equal on both sides. Inspect belt and buckets through the service trap door.
Monthly
- Grease the take-up bearings and the pillow-block bearing at the head with multipurpose gearbox grease.
- Check and empty the rejected-media barrel under the separator.
Every 2,000 hours
- Change gear-motor oil (nameplate).
- Inspect belt and buckets through the trap door; re-tension; replace belt or buckets at signs of wear.
| Bucket elevator part | Kresco part # |
|---|---|
| Take-up roller bearing, lift shaft | 916558 |
| Roller bearing, head shaft | 924980 |
Pneumatic-recovery rooms replace the screws and elevator with floor hoppers and conveying hose; on those, inspect the abrasive conveying hoses under the recovery hoppers and the air jets in the hopper bottoms at the same monthly interval.
5. Cartridge dust collector (CDC Series)
Daily — check the dust drum level; empty as needed.
Weekly — read the DCT1000 controller. Check for an alarm and note the process value (pressure drop across the cartridges).
Monthly — check ducting for leaks and wear. Inspect the Goyen pulse valves; service or replace.
Every 6 months — check motor bearings.
About every 3 years — replace cartridges. Replace all of them at once, regardless of individual condition; one perforated cartridge can damage the impeller and will mislead the controller.
Reading and tuning the DCT1000
The controller monitors the static pressure differential between the clean and dirty sides of the cartridges. A brand-new set reads 0.2–1.0 while the dust cake forms; seasoned cartridges run between the factory Low Limit 2.0 and High Limit 3.5. When the value reaches the High Limit a pulse cycle starts and should bring it back down to the Low Limit.
When the cleaning cycle can no longer reach the Low Limit and runs continuously, raise both limits by 0.2 above the stagnant value (reading stuck at 2.2 → set Low 2.4, High 3.9) and keep stepping up moderately. When the cartridges can’t get back down to a Low Limit of 7.0 (High 8.5), they’re done: change the full set and reset to 2.0 / 3.5. Factory defaults: Time Off 10 s between pulses, On Time 250 ms, High Limit 2.5–3.5, Low Limit 1.5–2.5, High Alarm = High Limit + 2. Write the original settings down before changing anything.
| Dust collector part | Kresco part # |
|---|---|
| Standard cartridge, MERV 11 (each) | 601307 |
| Nanofiber cartridge, MERV 15 flame-retardant (each) | 601317 |
| Door seal ½” × 1″ (per foot) | 618305 |
| 1½” Goyen valve, complete assembly | 601329 |
| 1½” Goyen valve repair kit | M-2192 |
| DCP100 pressure module / DCT1000 sequencer | 908704 |
6. Baghouse dust collector (DCM200, pneumatic-recovery rooms)
- New bags: do not shake for the first two weeks (about 60 hours) — the bags need a light dust layer to filter properly, and a little dust will escape the outlet during break-in. If the collector has automatic pneumatic shaking, leave the air disconnected during that period.
- Daily: at end of shift, with the motor off, press the shaker button at least ten times. Never shake with the motor running.
- Weekly/monthly: drain the hopper into a container or empty the waste drum.
- Every 6 months: check motor bearings; check the self-adhesive foam seal; replace bags when the collector can no longer clear the room.
- Never wash bags. Clean with compressed air only, blowing from outside to inside.
| Baghouse part | Kresco part # | Qty |
|---|---|---|
| DB6 dust bag media (anti-static knitted polyester) | 601316 | 30 |
| ½” × ½” self-adhesive rubber foam | 618306 | 12 ft |
