Description
VpCI®-429 is a pH-neutral, chelating rust remover and multi-metal cleaner: no neutralization step and no separate rust preventative afterwards, because it protects the metal during the process and a follow-up dip in clean solution leaves four to five weeks of protection. The 5-gallon pail is used in a dip tank at low concentration, so a pail goes a long way.
VpCI-429 is for the shop that wants one tank instead of three. Acidic rust removers such as VpCI-422 and VpCI-426 need a rinse and a neutralizing cleaner because the bare steel they expose flash rusts within minutes; VpCI-429 works at pH 6.5 to 7.0 by chelating the iron oxide rather than dissolving it in acid, so it completely cleans rusted surfaces while preventing further rusting during the cleaning process. That neutral pH also makes it the choice where effluent limits or operator exposure rule out an acid, and it doubles as a salt remover: at 0.2 to 0.7 % by weight it strips marine and de-icing salts from equipment before they start corrosion. It is non-toxic and biodegradable, and in the Cortec Product Consultation Guide it is approved on all eight listed metals: carbon steel, stainless steel, cast iron, aluminum alloys, galvanized steel, copper, brass and solder.
Typical applications
- Dip-tank rust removal on multiple metals
- Marine and de-icing salt removal
- Rust removal without a neutralization step
- Post-dip corrosion protection of four to five weeks
- Mixed-metal assemblies, including aluminum and yellow metals
- Shops with pH-restricted effluent or no acid handling
- Vehicle and equipment underbodies after winter or coastal service
- Fasteners, hardware and small parts cleaned by the basket
How to apply VpCI-429
- Pre-clean. Remove grease, debris and loose flaky rust with a rag, wire brush or pressure wash; degrease heavily oiled parts first so the chelant reaches the rust.
- Charge the tank. Mix VpCI-429 with water in a tank large enough to submerge the part. For salt removal use 0.2 to 0.7 % by weight; for rust removal follow the current Cortec data sheet for the working concentration, starting low and adjusting to the rust load.
- Soak. Immerse the part and let the solution work. Agitation and mild heat speed removal.
-
Rust Approximate dip time Light 15–30 minutes Heavy Overnight - Inspect. Lift the part and check; return it to the bath or scrub if rust remains. Because the solution is pH-neutral the part will not flash rust while you work.
- Protect. Give the clean part a follow-up dip in fresh, clean VpCI-429 solution and let it air dry. The dried film protects for four to five weeks indoors with no neutralizing step and no separate rust preventative. For longer or outdoor storage follow with a VpCI rust preventative or VpCI packaging.
- Bath maintenance and storage. Filter fines, skim sludge, cover the tank and add fresh product as the bath loads with iron. Non-toxic, biodegradable and non-flammable; store at room temperature and keep from freezing.
Where it fits in the Cortec line
VpCI-429 is the no-neutralizer option among Cortec’s rust removers. VpCI-422 is the fast, 92 % biobased organic liquid for steel, copper and brass; VpCI-423 is the same chemistry as a gel for vertical surfaces; VpCI-426 is the heavy-duty scale remover with metal-specific dilutions. All three are acidic and need a rinse and a VpCI-416 or VpCI-414 neutralizing dip; VpCI-429 trades some speed on heavy rust for a single-tank process and built-in protection. It runs well in the immersion and agitation tanks of Build-All and Magido aqueous parts washers, where the same tank can derust and protect a basket of parts. For equipment that cannot be derusted, CorrVerter rust converter primer is the alternative. See the full rust prevention range for what comes after.
Field notes
A Racine, Wisconsin gear manufacturer used to blast or send out spare parts that had rusted in storage, delaying shipments by days. Now rusty parts are submerged in VpCI-422 for up to 20 minutes, rinsed, dipped immediately in VpCI-415, air-dried and shipped the same day; stock was later moved into VpCI-126 bags with BioPads so it no longer needs de-rusting. (Cortec Case History #489)
Severe rust on the machined mounting pads of gas-turbine base plates would have prevented seating and caused vibration. VpCI-423 gel was left to dwell and cleaned off with 10% VpCI-414, about one hour per plate with 15 to 20 minutes hands-on, removing all corrosion in far fewer man-hours than grinding. (Cortec Case History #681)
An Oklahoma waste-to-energy plant had 364 spare boiler tubes, bundled in twelves, unusable from internal rust after years outdoors. Each bundle was connected in series to a VpCI-422 circuit of tank, pump and hoses: circulate 30 minutes, soak 30 minutes, circulate and filter back, then a VpCI-418 LM circuit for a 30-minute rinse and neutralization. Two weeks for the whole job, and the tubes went into service. (Cortec Case History #835)
