Every shop knows the pattern: parts get machined, cleaned, inspected — then sit. On a shelf, in a tote, in a warehouse, in a container headed overseas. Weeks later there is orange bloom on the surfaces you worked hardest to finish. Here is how to stop it, in order of what actually causes the problem.

Why parts rust in storage

Rust needs three things: bare metal, oxygen, and moisture. Storage gives it all three — humidity swings cause condensation cycles on part surfaces, cardboard and untreated paper packaging actually hold moisture against the metal, and handling leaves fingerprints (salt) that become corrosion sites. The parts most at risk are the ones that were just cleaned: a freshly washed part is stripped of every protective oil, and flash rust can start within hours in a humid plant.

Option 1: VCI packaging (cleanest, no residue)

Vapor phase Corrosion Inhibitor packaging — VCI bags and film or VCI paper — releases invisible corrosion inhibitors inside the package. The molecules form a protective layer on every metal surface, including bores, threads, and surfaces you cannot see. No coating to apply, no residue to remove: parts come out clean, dry, and ready to use. Sealed VCI bags protect up to 2 years; paper is ideal for wrapping and interleaving. This is the default answer for most stored parts.

Option 2: VCI emitters (for enclosed spaces you already have)

If parts live in a toolbox, cabinet, gun safe, or electrical enclosure, a VCI emitter protects the whole enclosed space — stick it inside and replace it every couple of years. Emitters are standard practice for control panels and stored electronics because they protect contacts and boards without touching them.

Option 3: liquid rust preventatives (protection on the part itself)

When parts cannot be packaged — work-in-process between operations, or oversized weldments — a liquid rust preventative applied by spray or dip leaves a thin film that protects for months. Modern water-based VpCI liquids dry clean to the touch, and several can be added directly to the final rinse of an aqueous parts washer, so rust prevention happens automatically in your wash cycle.

What not to do

Skip the old-school heavy grease unless you truly need barrier protection outdoors — it attracts grit, it has to be degreased off before use, and that extra cleaning step costs more than VCI packaging. And do not store cleaned parts in plain cardboard or untreated kraft paper: both are mildly acidic and hold moisture, which accelerates rust rather than preventing it.

A simple storage rust checklist

Protect parts within an hour of cleaning. Keep them off bare concrete floors. Use VCI paper or bags as the inner layer, never plain cardboard against machined surfaces. Seal for long-term or export storage. Add emitters to closed cabinets. If parts move through a washer, put the rust preventative in the process, not after it.
