Electrical cabinets, control panels, toolboxes, junction boxes, stored equipment — anywhere metal sits inside an enclosed space, humidity finds it. VCI emitters are the simplest fix in the corrosion toolbox: stick one inside, close the door, and the space protects itself. Here is how they work and how to size them.

The mechanism

A VCI emitter is a small device — a foam pad, cup, or disc — loaded with Vapor phase Corrosion Inhibitors. The inhibitors evaporate slowly and saturate the enclosed air space, then condense as an invisible, molecule-thin protective film on every metal surface: terminals, relay contacts, solder joints, tool steel, machined surfaces. The film interrupts the electrochemical reaction that causes rust and oxidation. Open the enclosure and the layer dissipates from exposed surfaces — then re-forms when you close it again.

Why maintenance teams love them

They are set-and-forget: no wiring, no coating to apply, no residue on contacts, and no effect on electrical, optical, or mechanical performance. That last point is why VpCI emitters are standard practice for protecting control panels, PLCs, and stored electronics — they protect circuit boards without ever touching them.

Sizing an emitter

Emitters are rated by the volume they protect. Measure your enclosure (height x width x depth) and match the rating: a Cortec VpCI-105 covers up to 5 cubic feet, a VpCI-111 up to 11 cubic feet. Bigger space? Use multiple emitters or adhesive-backed foam strips. Each device lasts up to 2 years — write the install date on the emitter and add replacement to your PM schedule.

Where they earn their keep

Electrical and control cabinets in humid plants. Marine electronics and boat consoles. Toolboxes and gauge drawers. Gun safes. Spare-parts cabinets and sealed crates. Mothballed equipment — pair an emitter inside the enclosure with VCI film wrapping outside for long-term layup protection.

Emitters vs. desiccant packs

Desiccants absorb moisture until they are full, then quietly stop working — and they never protect surfaces air cannot reach. Emitters actively protect the metal itself for years and do not saturate. For enclosures that get opened and closed, emitters win decisively because the protection re-establishes itself.
