Ask three suppliers how long VCI protection lasts and you’ll get “up to two years” from all three. It’s a fair answer and a nearly useless one, because the phrase “up to” is doing all the work. The same emitter that protects a sealed control cabinet for two years will be exhausted in a few months inside a panel with a missing gasket.

What actually determines the number is straightforward, and once you understand it you can size a job correctly the first time.

What “up to two years” actually means

Vapor corrosion inhibitors work by releasing a chemical vapor that migrates through an enclosed air space and adsorbs onto exposed metal, forming a molecular protective layer. That layer isn’t permanent — it’s continuously maintained by the vapor in the space around it.

So the rating on the package assumes two things: that the vapor stays where you put it, and that there’s enough of it for the volume you’re protecting. Manufacturer ratings are established under controlled conditions with an intact enclosure. They describe a ceiling, not a promise.

The moment the enclosure leaks, the clock speeds up.

The three things that decide real-world life

Enclosure integrity. This is the big one. VCI needs a reasonably closed space. A sealed poly bag, a gasketed cabinet, a closed crate lined with VCI film, a capped pipe — these hold vapor. A cardboard box with open seams, a cabinet with a missing door gasket, a tarp thrown over a machine — these don’t. Air exchange is what kills VCI protection, and every air change carries inhibitor out of the space.

Ratio of inhibitor to volume. Every VCI product is rated for a volume of enclosed space — emitters by cubic feet, paper and film by surface area and enclosure size. Under-dose the space and the vapor concentration never reaches the level it needs to maintain the protective layer. This is the most common sizing error we see: someone drops one emitter into a cabinet three times larger than it’s rated for and concludes the product doesn’t work.

Conditions inside the enclosure. Temperature swings drive condensation, and standing water on a metal surface will overwhelm vapor-phase protection. High humidity, salt exposure, coastal or marine environments, and dissimilar metals in contact all shorten effective life. So does contamination — fingerprints, machining fluid residue, and chlorides on the part surface all give corrosion a head start that the inhibitor then has to fight.

Matching the format to the enclosure

The right format depends less on the part than on the space around it.

VCI film and bags work when you can seal the part itself. Best case is a heat-sealed or zip-closed bag sized close to the part — small air volume, minimal exchange, long life. This is the highest-confidence option for long-term storage and overseas shipping.

VCI paper works when you need to interleave or wrap, especially for stacked parts, tooling, or items with surfaces that shouldn’t touch each other. Multimetal grades cover mixed ferrous and non-ferrous assemblies. Paper is also the practical answer when a part is too awkward to bag.

VCI emitters and diffusers are for enclosed spaces you can’t wrap — electrical cabinets, control panels, tool crib drawers, gearboxes, instrument housings. They’re rated by the cubic footage they protect, and they’re the format most often under-specified.

VCI powders and liquids handle wet systems and voids — boilers, tanks, piping, hydrostatic test water — where vapor alone can’t reach.

How to tell when protection has run out

There’s no dye that changes color when a VCI product is spent, so shops need a practical routine:

  • Date the installation. Write the install date directly on the emitter or the bag. Without this, nobody knows what they’re looking at two years later.
  • Set a replacement interval below the rating. If a product is rated for two years, replace at eighteen months. The margin costs little and covers the enclosure leaks you don’t know about.
  • Inspect the enclosure, not just the product. A cabinet that’s been opened daily for maintenance is on a much shorter clock than one that’s been sealed since installation. If the door has been open, reset your expectations.
  • Check the metal. Light surface bloom on an unprotected witness area inside the enclosure is the earliest signal you’re losing the battle.

Getting the sizing right

Most VCI failures we get called about are sizing failures, not product failures. Before you order, measure the enclosed volume in cubic feet, note whether the enclosure is genuinely sealed or merely closed, and be honest about how often it gets opened. Then match the product rating to that volume with margin, not exactly to it.
