Both VCI paper and VCI bags stop rust the same way — Vapor phase Corrosion Inhibitors (VpCI) evaporate inside the packaging and form an invisible, molecule-thin protective layer on every metal surface. The right choice comes down to how your parts are stored, stacked, and shipped. Here is the quick rule, then the details.
The quick rule
Use VCI paper when you wrap, interleave, or line. Stamped parts stacked in layers, individual machined components, bin and tote liners, or slip sheets between finished goods.
Use VCI bags when you need a sealed enclosure. Long-term storage, humid plants, overseas container shipments, or any time the part needs a moisture barrier along with corrosion protection.
When VCI paper wins
Cortec VpCI-146 paper is fast to use on a packing line — tear, wrap, done. It conforms to odd shapes, cushions machined surfaces, and works as interleaving between stacked stampings where a bag is impractical. It protects steel, cast iron, aluminum, copper, and brass simultaneously, and it is fully recyclable and repulpable, which matters if your customers have plastic-reduction targets. Parts come out clean and dry — no degreasing before use.
When VCI bags win
VpCI-126 film and bags add something paper cannot: a sealed barrier that locks inhibitors in and moisture-laden air out. Sealed VCI bags protect for up to 2 years, which makes them the standard for spare parts inventory, equipment mothballing, and export shipments that cross an ocean and sit at a port. Gusseted bags handle everything from small components to full pallets and crated machinery, and the translucent blue film lets you identify contents without opening the package.
Use both for the toughest jobs
For high-value or corrosion-prone parts, combine them: wrap or interleave with VpCI-146 paper, then seal in a VpCI-126 bag. The paper protects contact surfaces and cushions; the bag seals the environment. This paper-plus-bag approach is common for aerospace, defense, and export packaging specs.
Sizing and cost notes
Paper is sold by roll weight (30#, 35#, 60#) — heavier basis weight for heavier, sharper parts. Bags are sized to the part or pallet; stock sizes run from small zip locks to 60″ x 50″ x 95″ gusseted liners, and custom sizes are available. Both are consumables: figure cost per part protected, and compare it to the cost of one rusted shipment, a rework cycle, or a customer rejection. Rust protection is usually the cheapest line item on the packing list.
One more thing: parts rust fastest right after cleaning
Freshly washed parts flash-rust quickly — the clean metal surface is unprotected the moment it dries. If you run a parts washer or solvent-based cleaning line, plan the VCI step to happen as parts exit cleaning, or consider a liquid rust preventative in the final rinse.
