Description
VpCI®-329 D is VpCI-329 supplied pre-diluted by Cortec at 1 part concentrate to 9 parts naphthenic oil, the medium-term 1:9 ratio, equivalent to 10 % VpCI-329 by volume. It is ready to use: pour it into the dip tank or spray pot and go. Do not dilute it further. The 55-gallon drum is the size for a production dip tank or a shipping department that sprays every pallet.
It is the oil-based rust preventative for shops that want a thin, easy-to-clean film rather than a cosmoline-type coating, and that do not want to blend concentrate on site. The oil-soluble inhibitors leave a tenacious contact film and the vapor phase inhibitors protect recesses the oil misses, so a coated part is protected for typically up to two years in indoor storage, sheltered outdoor storage or transportation. Outdoor storage in the open is not recommended. Because it is the VpCI-329 chemistry, the Cortec Product Consultation Guide rating of 3, outside sheltered storage, applies on carbon steel, stainless steel, cast iron, aluminum alloys, galvanized steel, copper, brass and solder.

How to apply VpCI-329 D
- Surface preparation. SSPC-SP-1: free of water, grease, oil, corrosion, dirt, dust and mill scale. The surface must be dry; water in VpCI-329 D causes emulsification.
- Mixing. None. VpCI-329 D is pre-diluted and must not be diluted again. Roll or stir the drum or pail before charging the tank, because the inhibitor package can settle in storage.
- Dip. Fill a clean tank, submerge the part long enough to wet every recess, lift it out and let the excess drain back. Drips can be collected and reused. Cover the tank when not in use so contaminants and water stay out.
- Spray. Compressed-air or airless spray guns are recommended, but any equipment works because the goal is simply to saturate the part: spray until VpCI-329 D runs off vertical surfaces. Uniform film thickness is not required, but every surface must be covered; large uncoated areas can corrode.
- Brush. Acceptable for touch-up or for parts too large to dip or spray.
- Drying. None — the film stays tacky and oily. It is non-volatile, so parts are fully protected as soon as they are covered. For crated parts, a layer of VpCI-146 paper under the part wicks excess oil and stops pooling.
- Removal. Not needed for parts entering oil-lubricated service. Where a clean surface is required, wash with VpCI-414 or an alkaline parts-washer cleaner.
- Storage. Keep containers and the dip tank covered and free of water or incompatible chemicals.
Compatibility
VpCI-329 D shares the VpCI-329 elastomer profile: Cortec lists it as compatible with PTFE and neoprene and, with a consult-Cortec note, nitrile, and as not compatible with EPDM, silicone, butyl and polypropylene. Where it fits in the Cortec line
Buy VpCI-329 concentrate instead when you already run an oil blending station or need the 1:19 or 1:4 ratios. For parts stored outdoors in the open, step up to the heavier oil film of VpCI-369; for mirror finishes and gun barrels there is the vegetable-oil VpCI-325. Field notes
A Cleveland, Ohio coil processor needed a rust preventive after acid pickling that pushes rinse water off the strip rather than trapping it. VpCI-329 D is sprayed onto the strip after the post-pickle rinse and squeegeed across before recoiling; 15 years of use in 4,000-gallon bulk lots, and it beat a well-known coil rust preventive in humidity testing. A French gear-reducer maker had precision reducers rusting in shipment, and filling the cases with oil was costly and shipped as hazardous freight. VpCI-329 is now poured into the gearcase at only 0.3% of case volume, with CorShield VpCI-369 on the exterior: up to 48 months of protection, no oil fill and non-hazardous freight. A private aircraft owner in New Ulm, Minnesota stored an overhauled engine in a home garage through Minnesota winters with VpCI-329 poured into the engine and the engine wrapped in Cor-Pak VpCI stretch film inside a plywood crate with silica-gel bags.
