If your shop uses solvent to clean parts, spray guns, or equipment, a solvent recycling system can turn a recurring expense into a one-time investment. Instead of buying fresh solvent and paying to haul the dirty stuff away, you reclaim and reuse the same solvent over and over. Here’s how a solvent recycling machine works and whether one fits your operation.

How a solvent recycling system works

A solvent recycler is essentially a batch distillation unit. You pour in used, contaminated solvent; the unit heats it (many run under vacuum, which lowers the boiling temperature and is safer for flammable solvents). The clean solvent vaporizes, rises to a condenser, and cools back into a clear, reusable liquid that collects in a clean tank. The oil, grease, paint, resin, and metal fines that were dissolved or suspended in the solvent can’t vaporize, so they stay behind and concentrate into a small volume of sludge.

The result: clean solvent back at near-original purity, and a fraction of the waste volume. A typical unit recovers 90–95% of the solvent charged into it.

What it saves

The economics are simple. Every gallon you recover is a gallon you don’t buy and don’t pay to dispose of. Shops that were swapping solvent monthly often cut their solvent purchases by 80–90% and reduce hazardous-waste hauling to a couple of sludge changes a year. For most operations the machine pays for itself in well under two years.

Who benefits most

Any operation generating steady volumes of dirty solvent: machine shops, print shops (flexographic ink cleanup), cabinet and wood-finishing shops, paint booths and spray-gun cleaning, automotive and remanufacturing, and aerospace. If you’re cleaning with IPA, acetone, mineral spirits, MEK, or lacquer thinner and disposing of it regularly, recycling almost always makes sense.

Sizing the right machine

Recyclers come in a range of batch capacities, and the right size depends on your daily solvent throughput and the type of solvent. We carry on-site solvent recyclers from 8 to 64+ gallon capacity, including vacuum and explosion-proof configurations for flammable solvents.
