If you have shopped for rust prevention, you have seen the acronyms: VCI, VpCI, vapor corrosion inhibitor. Here is what the technology actually is, how it works, and when it beats oils, greases, and desiccants.
The short version
VpCI stands for Vapor phase Corrosion Inhibitor — Cortec’s name for VCI technology. VpCI materials (films, papers, emitters, liquids) slowly release invisible corrosion-inhibiting molecules into the air inside a package or enclosure. Those molecules settle on every metal surface and form a protective layer just a few molecules thick. The layer blocks the electrochemical reaction that causes rust — and when you unpack the part, it dissipates. No residue, no cleanup, nothing to remove.
Why that beats the old methods
Versus grease and oil: rust preventative grease works, but it attracts dirt, makes parts miserable to handle, and has to be degreased off before use — an entire extra cleaning step. VpCI-protected parts come out ready to assemble.
Versus desiccants: silica gel only removes moisture from the air — it does nothing once it saturates, and it never protects surfaces the air cannot reach. VpCI actively protects the metal itself, including bores, threads, and blind holes, and keeps working for years in sealed packaging.
What VpCI protects
Multimetal formulations like VpCI-126 film and VpCI-146 paper protect ferrous and non-ferrous metals at the same time: carbon steel, cast iron, stainless, aluminum, copper, brass, and galvanized surfaces. That matters for assemblies that mix metals — you protect the whole unit with one material.
The main formats
VCI bags and film seal parts in a protective micro-environment — the workhorse for storage and export shipping. VCI paper wraps and interleaves parts on the packing line. VCI emitters protect enclosed spaces like control cabinets and toolboxes. Liquid VpCI rust preventatives apply directly to parts by spray or dip — and some go straight into parts washer rinse water.
How long does protection last?
In sealed packaging, up to 2 years is typical — longer with intact heat-sealed bags. In vented enclosures with an emitter, plan on replacing the emitter every 1–2 years. Handling, package opening, and high airflow shorten protection; resealing restores it.
Is it safe?
Modern Cortec VpCI products are nitrite-free, non-toxic, and safe to handle without special PPE. The papers are recyclable and repulpable. That is a meaningful difference from older VCI chemistries.
