Description
Cortec® M-535 is an ashless corrosion inhibitor for turbine, gear and compressor oils during lay-up and intermittent operation. Use it wet, at 3 to 5 % by weight in the base oil, or dry, fogged into the drained void space at 0.5 to 1.0 fl oz per cubic foot. Because it is ashless it adds no metallic residue to oils that must stay within tight ash and varnish limits.
Turbine and compressor lube systems fail in storage from the water they already hold: condensed moisture on the surfaces above the oil, and free water trapped in low points. M-535 protects against both, and its vapor phase inhibitors reach the bearing housings, coolers and piping above the fluid level that the oil never wets. It can be added to the oil in service ahead of a shutdown, circulated and left in place for a wet lay-up, or the system can be drained and fogged for a dry lay-up. A higher viscosity version, M-535 HV, is available for heavier gear and compressor oils.
Typical applications
- Turbine systems
- Gearboxes and gear systems
- Hydraulic and circulating systems
- Compressor systems
- Layup and intermittent operation
- Steam and gas turbine lube reservoirs in wet or dry lay-up
- Standby compressors and their oil-flooded internals
- Turbine and compressor oil systems protected as the unit leaves the test stand
How to apply M-535
- Check compatibility. M-535 is not yet on Cortec’s published oil compatibility chart, so blend a sample of the turbine, gear or compressor oil at 5 % and check for haze or separation, or ask us to have Cortec Laboratories run the oil.
- Wet lay-up. Add 3 to 5 % by weight of M-535 to the reservoir before shutdown and circulate so it reaches bearings, coolers and piping; Cortec’s turbine lay-up practice for oil additives is to circulate for about four hours. Leave the oil in place.
- Dry lay-up. Drain the system and let it cool. Seal all but two openings and fog M-535 into the sump, housings and piping at 0.5 to 1.0 fl oz per cubic foot (0.5 to 1.0 liter per cubic meter) of void until mist appears at the exhaust port; cap it, complete the dose and seal the inlet.
- Return to service. No removal is required; the treated oil can remain in the system.
- Storage. Keep sealed; shelf life 2 years.
Where it fits in the Cortec line
M-535 is the ashless member of the M-series oil additives. M-531 is the standard turbine and gearbox package with strong demulsibility and a non-staining film; M-529 is the engine-oil package for intermittent service. The VpCI oil concentrates VpCI-322 and VpCI-329 add strong vapor-phase protection for equipment that will be drained and stored. For the voids around the oil system, VpCI-337 fogs at 0.5 to 1 oz/ft³.
