Oil Concentrate — Vapor Corrosion Inhibitor, 1:9 – 5 Gallon Pail (Cortec® VpCI®-322)

$466.00

An oil-based concentrate that adds vapor-phase corrosion protection to lubricating and hydraulic oils at one part in nine. Also foggable for enclosed spaces.

SKU: CORTEC-12100597 Categories: ,

Description

VpCI®-322 is an oil-based concentrate that adds vapor-phase corrosion protection to lubricating and hydraulic oils at one part in nine, and can also be fogged as-is into drained tanks, gearboxes and other enclosed spaces. It works in both mineral and synthetic oils, protects in the presence of chlorides, and is rated for 24 months of protection at the 1:9 ratio. The 5-gallon pail treats 45 gallons of oil or fogs about 700 cubic feet of drained void.

Cortec positions VpCI-322 for lubricating systems that run intermittently or go into lay-up: the additive stays in the oil while the machine operates and keeps protecting the surfaces above the oil line while it sits. In plant mothballing it is the product for pumps, compressors, gearboxes and oil tanks, and in oil and gas it is the standard pump preservative. It contains no barium, chromates, nitrites or phosphates and is a commercial equivalent to MIL-PRF-46002C. In the Cortec Product Consultation Guide VpCI-322 is rated 3, outside sheltered storage, on carbon steel, stainless steel, cast iron, aluminum alloys, galvanized steel, copper, brass and solder; it is not intended for uncovered outdoor exposure.

Typical applications

  • Lubricating and hydraulic oil systems
  • Intermittent-use systems
  • Stored equipment such as tanks and gearboxes
  • Fogging enclosed spaces
  • Pumps, compressors and gearboxes in plant lay-up
  • Drained oil reservoirs and tanks fogged before storage
  • Gas and steam turbine lube systems
  • Engine crankcases that will be run occasionally during storage
  • Pumps and motors preserved at 10 % by volume in the Clean-Protect-Preserve procedure

How to apply VpCI-322

  1. Check compatibility. Cortec’s oil compatibility chart lists VpCI-322 as compatible at 10 % or higher in most mineral and synthetic turbine, gear, hydraulic and diesel-engine oils it has tested, and as not compatible with polyglycol (PAG) gear oils. Blend a sample of your oil first if it is not on the chart.
  2. Dose as an additive. Add 1 part VpCI-322 to 9 parts oil (10 % by volume) to the reservoir, sump or gearbox. Run or circulate the system until the additive is distributed. Protection at this ratio is rated at 24 months.
  3. Wet or dry lay-up. Leave the treated oil in place, or drain it; the vapor phase inhibitors keep protecting the drained interior.
  4. Fogging. Drain the tank or housing and let it cool. Seal all but two openings, fog VpCI-322 concentrate through the low port with conventional or airless spray equipment at 1 quart per 35 cubic feet of void (roughly 0.9 fl oz per cubic foot, or 1 liter per 1.1 cubic meters) until mist appears at the exhaust port, cap the exhaust, finish the dose and seal the inlet.
  5. Return to service. No removal is needed; VpCI-322 can stay in the oil when the machine is restarted.
  6. Storage. Keep sealed; shelf life is up to 24 months.

Compatibility

Cortec’s oil compatibility chart lists VpCI-322 as compatible at 10 % in common turbine, gear and hydraulic oils such as Mobil DTE, Mobil Gear, Shell Turbo and Chevron GST grades, at 15 to 20 % in several diesel-engine and PAO gear oils, and as not compatible with polyglycol (PAG) gear oils. On elastomers it is compatible at 100 % with nitrile and neoprene. Test any fluid not on the chart before dosing a system. See the full oil and elastomer compatibility charts.

Where it fits in the Cortec line

Choose VpCI-329 when you want to set the protection term by ratio (1:19, 1:9 or 1:4) or need its MIL-C-16173D listing, and VpCI-326 for hydraulic circuits with fine filtration, since it passes a 1-micron filter. M-529 suits engine oils in intermittent service, M-531 turbine and gearbox oils where demulsibility matters, and M-535 is the ashless turbine grade. For large voids the water-based VpCI-337 fogs at 1 oz/ft³ without leaving an oil film. Browse the full Cortec VpCI line.

Field notes

A French gear-reducer maker had precision reducers rusting in shipment, and filling the cases with oil was costly and shipped as hazardous freight. VpCI-329 is now poured into the gearcase at only 0.3% of case volume, with CorShield VpCI-369 on the exterior: up to 48 months of protection, no oil fill and non-hazardous freight. (Cortec Case History #599)

A state-owned deepwater drilling contractor in Vietnam cold-stacked a rig with a full treatment schedule: VpCI-326 and VpCI-329 at 20% and M-531 at 5% in gearboxes, mud pumps and engines; VpCI-705 at 100 ppm in fuel; VpCI-649 BD at 0.5% in fresh-water systems; and VpCI-308 and VpCI-609 fogged into empty tanks and pipelines. (Cortec Case History #575)

A private pilot in Oshkosh, Wisconsin winterized the 180 hp engine of a restored 1965 amphibious airplane per the engine maker’s service letter: 26 oz of VpCI-326 in 8 quarts of oil (1:10), the engine run briefly and shut down, with extra mix sprayed into the cylinders after five months. (Cortec Case History #254)
