Description

CorShield® VpCI®-368 is VpCI-368 in an aerosol can — the dry-to-touch removable waxy film for flanges, pipe ends and equipment layups, good for two years outdoors. About 60 square feet per can, six cans to the pack.

The aerosol exists for the jobs a 5-gallon pail is wrong for: touching up a coated skid after a forklift scrape, sealing the machined face of a single flange, protecting a few bolts and fittings before a piece goes on the truck. The film is the same translucent, waxy, scratch-resistant and self-healing coating as bulk VpCI-368, and the Cortec Product Consultation Guide rates VpCI-368 4 (outside, uncovered storage) on carbon steel, stainless steel, cast iron, aluminum, galvanized steel, copper, brass and solder.

How to apply CorShield VpCI-368

  1. Surface preparation. The surface must be clean, dry and free of oil, grease, dirt and loose rust. No wash primer is needed on aluminum or galvanized steel.
  2. Spraying. Shake the can well and spray an even, wet coat, keeping the can moving to avoid runs. Build to 2.0 to 3.0 mils dry (3.4 to 5.2 mils wet). One 11 oz can covers about 60 sq ft at 1 mil DFT, so plan on 20 to 30 sq ft per can at the recommended film.
  3. Conditions. Apply between 45 and 90 °F (7 to 32 °C) on a surface above the dew point, in ventilated space.
  4. Drying. Dry to touch in 5 to 7 hours. Allow full dry before stacking or wrapping; full cure of the VpCI-368 film takes 3 to 7 days.
  5. Removal. For a film at the recommended DFT: spray the surface generously with VpCI-414 at 60 % in water (the coating-removal strength on the VpCI-414 data sheet), let it sit 10 to 15 minutes, then power-wash at 115 to 160 °F (46 to 71 °C) and 50 to 300 psi. Repeat until the coating is gone. VpCI-414 is the alkaline cleaner Cortec specifies for stripping its temporary coatings; the EcoAir VpCI-414 aerosol handles small areas.
  6. Storage. Store cans sealed and below 100 °F (38 °C). Shelf life is 2 years.

Where it fits in the Cortec line

For anything larger than a few square feet, buy VpCI-368 in the pail or drum, or VpCI-368 D ready to spray. The CorShield VpCI-369 aerosol is the oil-based counterpart that stays wet and lubricates, the better choice on chains, threads and moving parts. Remove with VpCI-414. Field notes

A Houston air-cooler manufacturer found its nitrogen-purged bundles leaked as the steel blinds contracted in temperature swings. It switched to fogging VpCI-337 into the bundles and sealing with PVC bumper gaskets, with flange faces de-rusted with VpCI-423 gel, degreased with VpCI-414 and sprayed with CorShield VpCI-368. No hermetic seal is needed. (Cortec Case History #823)

An East Chicago, Indiana boiler-equipment manufacturer needed an outdoor rust preventive that would take rain, ice, snow and sand abrasion yet remove easily. VpCI-368 diluted 1:3 with mineral spirits, sprayed over heat exchangers, castings and large bearings without first removing the cutting oil, gave better outdoor protection, easier removal and a self-healing film. A Minnesota township extended the life of a plow and salt truck with VpCI-415 pressure wash, VpCI-105 emitters under the dash, ElectriCorr VpCI-239 on electrical contacts, CorrVerter hand-painted on rust, VpCI-368 D pump-sprayed on the undercarriage, VpCI-369 on hinges and moving parts and VpCI-396 rolled onto the salt box, at far lower cost and labor than the alternatives.
