Description

CorShield® VpCI®-369 is VpCI-369 in aerosol form — an oil-based wet film that protects and lubricates in extreme environments. Commercial equivalent to MIL-PRF-16173E Grade 2, with four NSN listings. Six 11 oz cans to the pack.

The can is for the parts a pail cannot reach economically: a length of anchor chain, the exposed threads and slides on a forklift mast, the shaft and coupling on a pump that is coming off line, hinges and latches on a boat trailer over winter. The film is the same translucent, oily, self-healing coating as bulk VpCI-369. In the Cortec Product Consultation Guide VpCI-369 is rated 4 (outside, uncovered storage) on carbon steel, stainless steel, cast iron, aluminum, galvanized steel, copper, brass and solder.

How to apply CorShield VpCI-369

  1. Surface preparation. The surface must be clean and dry, free of oil, dirt and loose rust. No wash primer is needed on aluminum or galvanized steel.
  2. Spraying. Shake the can well and spray an even, wet coat from a few inches away, working the film into threads and recesses. Aim for the VpCI-369 range of 1.0 to 3.0 mils; the film stays wet, so a visible oily sheen is the target.
  3. Conditions. Apply between 45 and 90 °F (7 to 32 °C) on a surface above the dew point.
  4. Drying. None. The film does not dry or cure and protects as soon as it is on. Wrap or cover parts so the film is not wiped off.
  5. Removal. For a film at the recommended DFT: spray the surface generously with VpCI-414 at 60 % in water (the coating-removal strength on the VpCI-414 data sheet), let it sit 10 to 15 minutes, then power-wash at 115 to 160 °F (46 to 71 °C) and 50 to 300 psi. Repeat until the coating is gone. VpCI-414 is the alkaline cleaner Cortec specifies for stripping its temporary coatings; the EcoAir VpCI-414 aerosol handles small areas.
  6. Storage. Store cans sealed and below 100 °F (38 °C). Shelf life is 2 years.

Compatibility

Cortec lists VpCI-369 as compatible with Viton (FKM) at 10 %; other elastomers are not reported. Test seals and hoses that will sit in the film. See the full oil and elastomer compatibility charts.

Where it fits in the Cortec line

For dip tanks and large areas buy VpCI-369 in the pail or drum, or VpCI-369 D pre-diluted. Field notes

A Wisconsin forklift-leasing company saw trucks leased 1 to 2 years into a brine and sauerkraut plant come back with slashed resale value. Now CorrVerter goes on rusted areas as needed, EcoShield VpCI-386 on all painted metal, CorShield VpCI-369 on unpaintable moving parts and ElectriCorr VpCI-239 on exposed electrical connections, touched up monthly. The trucks stay resalable and the program was copied for a foundry lease. (Cortec Case History #737)

A French gear-reducer maker had precision reducers rusting in shipment, and filling the cases with oil was costly and shipped as hazardous freight. VpCI-329 is now poured into the gearcase at only 0.3% of case volume, with CorShield VpCI-369 on the exterior: up to 48 months of protection, no oil fill and non-hazardous freight. A Minnesota township extended the life of a plow and salt truck with VpCI-415 pressure wash, VpCI-105 emitters under the dash, ElectriCorr VpCI-239 on electrical contacts, CorrVerter hand-painted on rust, VpCI-368 D pump-sprayed on the undercarriage, VpCI-369 on hinges and moving parts and VpCI-396 rolled onto the salt box, at far lower cost and labor than the alternatives.
