Description

EcoAir® VpCI®-377 is Cortec’s water-based VpCI-377 rust preventative in a compressed-air can. It is non-flammable, it does not need removing before painting or further processing, and it leaves the same dry, clear, hydrophobic film as the bulk product. Twelve 12 oz cans per case.

The can is the touch-up and maintenance format for the VpCI-377 line: bare spots after machining, tooling going back on the rack, fasteners and mating faces on equipment awaiting installation, parts that missed the dip tank. EcoAir cans are air-powered: the formulation sits in a four-layer bag inside a can pressurized with air, so no propellant contaminates the film, the can sprays in any direction including upside down, and it ships by air freight without the storage or fire-insurance restrictions on solvent aerosols. In the Cortec Product Consultation Guide EcoAir VpCI-377 is rated 2 (inside storage) on carbon steel, stainless steel, cast iron, aluminum, galvanized steel, copper, brass and solder.

Typical applications

  • Indoor temporary corrosion prevention
  • Replacing oil-based rust preventatives
  • Parts held between operations
  • Pre-paint protection
  • Touch-up of bare or reworked spots on parts already treated in a VpCI-377 dip
  • Tooling, fixtures, gauges and dies between uses
  • Fasteners, flanges and mating faces on equipment in indoor storage

How to apply EcoAir VpCI-377

  1. Surface preparation. The metal should be clean and free of grease, oil, rust and dirt (SSPC-SP-1). Wipe or wash first; the film goes on top of whatever is there.
  2. Shake and spray. Shake the can and spray a light, even coat over every surface to be protected, working the can at any angle needed to reach recesses. A milky or heavy wet film means too much product and a longer dry time.
  3. Dry. The film dries to the touch in about 15 to 30 minutes at 70 °F and 50 % relative humidity, faster with air movement. Let it dry completely before wrapping or stacking parts.
  4. Paint or process. No removal is needed before painting or further processing; most coatings can be applied over the dry film.
  5. Removal. If the film must come off, rinse with water and follow with a VpCI-41x cleaner to prevent flash rust.
  6. Storage. Store cans at room temperature. The contents are water-based, so do not let them freeze.

Where it fits in the Cortec line

EcoAir VpCI-377 is the aerosol arm of the VpCI-377 concentrate family; the concentrate and the pre-diluted VpCI-377 D are the economical choice once you are treating parts by the basket. For the biobased, ready-to-use equivalent in bulk see BioCorr. For a removable outdoor coating in a hand sprayer, see EcoSpray VpCI-389. Browse the full Cortec VpCI line.

Field notes

During an Angolan power-plant gas-turbine outage the compressor housing and rotor were washed, de-rusted with VpCI-422, sprayed with EcoAir VpCI-377 and wrapped in VpCI-126 EM UV film with a VpCI-111 emitter inside, with the same treatment on pipe spools and manifolds until restart. (Cortec Case History #821)

A Pennsylvania locomotive-engine producer ships engines worldwide and stores them outdoors up to two years. VpCI-377 at 20% in the cooling water is cycled through, drained and recaptured, and the recaptured solution is tested for concentration and reused; the program had run almost nine years as of 2019. (Cortec Case History #622)

An Indiana automotive-electrical plant had parts rusting before they left the building. Its replacement three-stage wash runs 5% VpCI-414 with 0.4% defoamer, a water rinse, then 10% VpCI-377 as the final stage; three months of testing showed no corrosion and the process was approved. (Cortec Case History #095)
