SKU: CORTEC-35761146 Categories: ,

Description

EcoSpray™ VpCI®-389 is Cortec’s water-based VpCI-389 removable coating in a 16 oz pump-spray bottle, sold twelve to the case. The brochure describes it as a water-based coating to rust-proof iron, steel and aluminum, and it is positioned as the environmentally friendly replacement for oil-based rust-proofing products. It is a trigger sprayer, not an aerosol, so there is no propellant and the bottle is recyclable.

The pump bottle is the touch-up and small-job format of the VpCI-389 family: a bare edge on a coated fabrication, a few flanges and shafts going into the yard, a spare part that will sit outside, a coating scuffed in transit. In the Cortec Product Consultation Guide EcoSpray VpCI-389 is rated 4 (outside, uncovered storage) on carbon steel, stainless steel, cast iron, aluminum, galvanized steel, copper, brass and solder, the same as the bulk coating. The film dries translucent and slightly tacky with the UV resistance of VpCI-389, and comes off with a VpCI-41x alkaline cleaner and a hot-water pressure wash.

Typical applications

  • Rust-proofing iron and steel
  • Indoor corrosion protection
  • Outdoor corrosion protection
  • Equipment and metal parts
  • Touch-up of bare or damaged spots on parts coated with VpCI-389
  • Flanges, shafts, machined faces and fasteners on equipment stored outdoors
  • Spare parts and tooling kept in unheated or open storage

How to apply EcoSpray VpCI-389

  1. Surface preparation. Clean, dry metal free of grease, oil, dirt, fingerprints and loose rust. On sound but rusted steel, remove the rust first with VpCI-422 or VpCI-426.
  2. Shake and spray. Shake the bottle, then spray an even wet coat over the surface, overlapping passes so there are no dry spots. Aim for the VpCI-389 target of 1 to 2 mils dry; a light second pass after the first has set is better than one heavy coat that sags.
  3. Dry. Dry to touch in 10 to 60 minutes and dry to handle in 20 to 60 minutes at ambient conditions, as for VpCI-389. Full cure takes 3 to 7 days. Apply between 45 and 90 °F.
  4. Removal. Spray with VpCI-414 at 60 % in water, let it sit 10 to 15 minutes, and rinse with a hot-water pressure washer; repeat if needed.
  5. Storage. Keep the bottle capped and do not let it freeze; do not store above 100 °F (38 °C).
  6. See the Cortec coatings application guides and comparison table for the full VpCI-389 data.

Where it fits in the Cortec line

EcoSpray VpCI-389 is the hand-sprayer arm of the VpCI-389 family; the bulk coating and the pre-diluted VpCI-389 D are the economical choice for anything larger than touch-up. For indoor parts that will be painted or processed, the equivalent can is EcoAir VpCI-377. VpCI-391 is the non-tacky, weldable sibling, and the remover for all of them is VpCI-414. Field notes

A St. Paul, Minnesota plastics molder had machine cooling chambers nearly closed off by rust. The chambers were cleared by circulating an 8% descaler for about three hours, corroded parts dipped in VpCI-422 and VpCI-423 for eight hours and rinsed, then sprayed with EcoSpray VpCI-389 for a waxy protective film that also eased reinsertion. (Cortec Case History #050)

A Southeastern U.S. construction-equipment maker had loaders and skid steers sitting outside 6 to 12 months around dealer shipment, and the old oily rust preventive stayed sticky, collected dirt and could wash off. After testing VpCI-391 on fiberglass cabs and paint from about 2017, it goes on unpainted parts, bolt heads, hydraulic boxes, rims and tubing; no appearance complaints, and most dealers leave it on.
