EcoSonic ESD Multimetal VCI Kraft Paper – 35# 48″ x 600′ (Cortec® EcoSonic® ESD)

Description

EcoSonic® ESD is Cortec’s static-dissipative multimetal VCI kraft paper: a natural kraft sheet with a soybean-oil-based coating carrying Nano VpCI® corrosion inhibitors and a static-dissipative layer. This listing is the 48″ × 600′ roll in the standard 35 lb grade, for lining ESD totes and cartons and interleaving boards in bulk. It solves the two problems electronics packers usually have to solve with two materials: the coating bleeds off any triboelectric charge before it can reach a sensitive component, and its inhibitor vaporizes inside the package to lay a molecular protective layer on the solder joints, leads, contacts and housings that would otherwise tarnish and corrode in transit. The board comes out ready to install with nothing to clean, and the paper repulps and recycles like ordinary kraft.

EcoSonic ESD protects carbon steel, stainless steel, galvanized steel, cast iron, aluminum alloys, copper, brass (up to 30% zinc) and solder, which covers the mixed metals on a populated board and in a panel. Its surface resistance falls in the static-dissipative range, 1.0 × 10⁸ to 1.0 × 10¹¹ ohms per ANSI/ESD STM11.11, and static decay is under 0.2 seconds per MIL-STD-3010C Method 4046; vapor-inhibiting ability is tested per MIL-PRF-3420G. Cortec’s Product Consultation Guide rates its VpCI kraft papers, including the earlier static-dissipative grade VpCI-145, at 2, inside storage, on all eight metals: enclosed packaging, uncovered indoor storage and shipment inside a carton or container. Use it in place of a pink-poly or foil ESD wrap with a separate desiccant, and in place of VCI paper that offers no static protection. It contains no nitrites, phosphates or silicates; note the shelf life is one year, shorter than a standard VCI paper.

How to use EcoSonic ESD paper

1. Prepare the items. Boards and parts should be clean, dry and at room temperature; handle at a grounded ESD workstation as you normally would, since the paper protects the item in the package, not on the bench.
2. Size the paper. Pull and cut to length from a roll dispenser; a 48″ width lines a full tote or pallet layer in one sheet. The 35 lb grade is the interleaving weight; step up to 60 lb for heavy assemblies with edges. Cortec’s rule of thumb for its VpCI papers, published on the VpCI-144 data sheet, is roughly 1 ft² of paper for every 3 ft² of metal surface, or 1 ft² for every 0.5 ft³ of void in the package.
3. Coated side to the item. Keep the paper as close to the surface of the item as practical, with no other barrier between the paper and the metal.
4. Wrap, fold and tape. Wrap the board or part, fold the edges together and tape the folds, or lay the paper as an interleaf between boards in a tote and as a liner over the top of the load.
5. Enclose. Protection lasts as long as the package stays closed. For shipment and multi-year storage, place wrapped items in a sealed EcoSonic VpCI-125 ESD bag so the outer package is static-dissipative as well.
6. Unpack and install. Unwrap and use; there is nothing to remove and the protective layer does not affect conductivity or resistance.
7. Dispose. Fully recyclable and repulpable through normal paper channels.
8. Store the paper. Keep unused rolls in the original wrapping, away from heat and moisture, and rotate first-in, first-out; shelf life 1 year stored properly.

Combining with other VpCI packaging

Cortec’s electronics package is EcoSonic ESD paper as the wrap or interleaf inside an EcoSonic VpCI-125 bag, with a VpCI-131 or VpCI-132 antistatic foam pad added where there is a large void to charge; the 130-series foams meet MIL-PRF-81705D for ESD, so nothing in the package generates a charge. For contacts and terminals that will be exposed in service, ElectriCorr VpCI-238 (indoor) or VpCI-239 (outdoor) adds a thin inhibiting film, and ElectriCorr VpCI-286 is the acrylic conformal coating. A Desicorr VpCI pouch covers packages where trapped humidity is the main driver.

Where it fits in the Cortec line

VpCI-146 is the general-purpose multimetal kraft and VpCI-144 the moisture-barrier grade; neither is static-dissipative, so they belong around mechanical parts, not boards.
