Description
The Desicorr® VpCI® 1/6-unit pouch is Cortec’s two-in-one insert for packaged metal: a 2.75″ × 2.25″ flat pouch with desiccant on one side and vapor-phase corrosion inhibitor on the other, protecting up to 1 ft³ (28 L) of enclosed space for up to 2 years. It pulls the moisture out of the package and inhibits corrosion on every metal surface at the same time, with an indicator window that shows when the desiccant is spent.
One side of the patented pouch holds desiccant that pulls water vapor out of the package air; the other holds Cortec VpCI that vaporizes and condenses as a molecular layer on every metal surface. The desiccant keeps humidity down while it has capacity, and the VpCI keeps protecting after the desiccant is saturated or the package is opened and resealed. It protects aluminum, carbon steel, stainless steel, copper, brass, galvanized steel, silicon steel and solder for up to 2 years, with nothing to clean off at unpacking. This is the windowed version, with indicator spheres that change from light yellow to dark when the desiccant is spent, so a glance through the bag tells you where the package stands. In the Cortec Product Consultation Guide Desicorr VpCI is rated 1, enclosed: it belongs inside a sealed bag, box or case, where it replaces plain silica-gel or clay packs that do nothing once they are spent.
Typical applications
- Completed assemblies and components
- Motors, gearboxes and mechanical controls
- Precision machined or stamped parts
- Marine and commercial electronic equipment
- Vacuum-sealed and heat-sealed barrier bags for multi-year storage
- Corrugated boxes, plastic wrap, wood or metal containers
- Instrument cases, tool boxes and shipping cases
- Export packages that see condensation cycles in transit
How to use Desicorr VpCI
- Start with clean, dry parts. Wash off coolant, fingerprints and salts and dry completely; a desiccant pouch cannot dry a wet part in time to prevent rust.
- Size the dose. One 1/6-unit pouch per 1 ft³ (28 L) of package volume: one per shoebox-size carton or 12″ × 12″ bag, two in a 15″ × 12″ barrier bag for multi-year storage. Step up to the 1-unit pouch at 5 ft³ (140 L) for larger cartons, and to 4-unit and 8-unit pouches for crates. Use two pouches per volume for aggressive marine or overseas conditions.
- Place it in the shared air space. Lay or tape the pouch inside the package; do not open it. In a box of loose parts put it on top of the load, not underneath where the desiccant side is smothered.
- Close the package promptly. Seal the VpCI-126 bag or barrier bag, tape the carton, or vacuum- and heat-seal a foil bag immediately after inserting the pouch; every minute open is humidity the desiccant must remove later.
- Allow the void to condition. The VpCI adsorbs on the metal within about a day. After shipping, keep the package closed for 24 hours after arrival so it acclimates before it is opened.
- Check the indicator (windowed version). The spheres change from light yellow to dark when the desiccant is fully spent; the VpCI side continues to protect, but fit a fresh pouch if the package is resealed for long storage.
- Return to service. Remove the part; no cleaning is required. Discard the pouch.
- Store unused pouches sealed. Shelf life is 2 years at 40–100 °F; close the carton between uses, because an open carton is drawing moisture from the room.

Combining with other VpCI packaging
Desicorr VpCI is the insert for packages where humidity, not just time, is the driver: barrier bags for multi-year storage, shipments through tropical ports, and cases that see daily temperature swings. For ordinary indoor storage a VpCI-126 Blue bag with a VpCI-131 foam pad or BioPad is usually enough, and VpCI-146 paper handles interleaving. Parts should be clean and dry before they are packaged; see the Build-All and Magido aqueous parts washers.
Where it fits in the Cortec line
Cortec’s insert ladder runs from Cor-Pak tablets (0.25 ft³ each) and Cor-Pak 1-MUL pouches (1 ft³) through the 8 ft³ Cor-Pak pouch to VpCI-308 and EcoPouch powder pouches (35 ft³); all of those are VpCI only. Desicorr VpCI is the only insert in the line that adds desiccant capacity, available as 1/6 unit and 1 unit windowed pouches and 1/6 unit and 1 unit non-windowed (NW) pouches; plain Desicorr without VpCI is made to order. For electrical cabinets use the VpCI-101 or VpCI-111 emitters instead. Browse the full Cortec VpCI line or the VpCI product selection guide.
Field notes
A Northeast U.S. aircraft-engine shop stopped exterior corrosion and staining in storage and shipping with a large VpCI-126 gusseted bag over the pallet framework, Desicorr NW VpCI pouches inside, and for hot, humid destinations a 3-second spray of VpCI-337 aerosol before sealing. No more oil on bare metal. (Cortec Case History #748)
A Louisiana shipyard needed 4 to 6 weeks of internal protection for a hydraulic tank but could not compatibility-test a liquid rust preventive against the customer’s fluid in the 7 days available, and the tank would be welded, not cleaned, before filling. VpCI-308 pouches tethered inside during shipping and welding, removed before fill, delivered it rust-free. (Cortec Case History #774)
A UK plant with hundreds of rusting machined castings built a de-rust and protect line from its existing top-loading washers: spray VpCI-422 at ambient, neutralize with 10% VpCI-419 at 70 °C, dip in BioCorr for up to 24 months of protection, then repack with VCI packaging and desiccant. No rusty parts since, and the process went group-wide. (Cortec Case History #520)
