Cor-Pak® 1-MUL Pouches – Each Protects 1 cu ft (300/Case)

$336.30

Cortec Cor-Pak® 1-MUL breathable Tyvek® pouch of multimetal VpCI powder: toss one into a bag or box and it protects up to 1 ft³ (28 L) of steel, stainless, galvanized, aluminum and copper alloys for up to 24 months; non-dusting, NSN 6850-01-470-2737. 300 pouches per carton, Cortec product number 10500016.

Description

Cor-Pak® 1-MUL is Cortec’s toss-in VpCI® pouch for small packages: a 2.5″ × 2.75″ breathable nonwoven-fabric pouch of multimetal vapor-phase corrosion inhibitor powder that protects up to 1 ft³ (28 L) of enclosed space for up to 24 months. The VpCI vaporizes through the membrane, spreads through the package air and adsorbs on every metal surface as a molecular layer; the powder stays inside the pouch, so there is no dust on the parts and nothing to clean off at unpacking. It is approved for military use under NSN 6850-01-470-2737.

The 1-MUL pouch protects carbon steel, stainless steel, galvanized steel, aluminum and its alloys, and copper and its alloys, so mixed-metal hardware can share one box. Because the protective layer is self-replenishing, a package can be opened for inspection and resealed without losing protection, and parts can ship to the end customer with the pouch still inside. The VpCI powder is a commercial equivalent to MIL-I-22110C, and the pouch is listed under GSA 8030-01-208-1769. In the Cortec Product Consultation Guide Cor-Pak 1-MUL is rated 1, enclosed: it works inside a sealed bag, box or container, not on an open shelf. It replaces oil dips and wax papers on small parts, and it suits automatic insertion on a packing line where a loose tablet or a foam square would not survive handling.

Typical applications

  • Completed assemblies, parts and components
  • Parts in antistatic packages
  • Motors and mechanical controls
  • Precision machined or stamped parts
  • Marine and commercial electronic equipment
  • Electrical equipment and controls
  • Tools, spare parts and hardware kits
  • Corrugated boxes, plastic wrap or bags, wood or metal containers

How to use Cor-Pak 1-MUL

  1. Start with clean, dry parts. Wash off coolant, fingerprints and salts and dry completely; the pouch has desiccant and VpCI action, but it cannot fix standing water or process residue left on the metal.
  2. Size the dose. One pouch per 1 ft³ (28 L) of package volume: one per 12″ cube or shoebox carton, two in a 12″ × 12″ × 24″ box. For 8 ft³ cartons move up to the Cor-Pak 8 ft³ pouch, and use two pouches per volume for aggressive marine or overseas conditions.
  3. Insert without opening. Drop the pouch in by hand or from an automatic dispenser; placement is not critical as long as it shares the air space with the metal and nothing solid blocks the vapor path.
  4. Close and seal the package shortly afterward. Seal the VpCI-126 bag, tape the carton or close the container; a sealed enclosure with minimal free air holds the VpCI concentration.
  5. Allow the void to saturate. The inhibitor charges the air space and condenses on every metal surface within about a day. After shipping, keep the package closed for about 24 hours after it arrives so it can acclimate to the building before it is opened.
  6. Reopen and reclose as needed. The molecular layer is replenished by continuous vapor protection once the package is reclosed; protection is up to 24 months.
  7. Return to service. Remove the part; no degreasing or cleaning is required. Discard the pouch.
  8. Store unused pouches sealed. Keep the carton closed, indoors and out of direct sunlight at 40 to 100 °F (4 to 38 °C); Cortec gives Cor-Pak pouches a 2-year shelf life.

Combining with other VpCI packaging

The standard small-package system is a VpCI-126 Blue zip bag or heat-sealed 126 bag with a Cor-Pak 1-MUL pouch inside, or a plain corrugated box lined with VpCI-146 paper and one pouch on top of the load. For kitted hardware that ships loose in a carton, VpCI-143 paper squares or Cor-Pak tablets give a finer dose per compartment. Parts should be clean and dry before they are packaged; see the Build-All and Magido aqueous parts washers, and where parts sit for more than a day or two before packaging, a water-based rust preventative such as VpCI-377 bridges the gap.

Where it fits in the Cortec line

Cortec’s insert ladder is dosed by volume: Cor-Pak tablets at 0.25 ft³ each, Cor-Pak 1-MUL pouches at 1 ft³, the Cor-Pak 8 ft³ pouch, and the 35 ft³ powder pouches, VpCI-308 for all metals including copper and bronze and EcoPouch (VpCI-609 Bio) for ferrous metals and aluminum. Desicorr VpCI adds desiccant capacity where humidity is the driver; the VpCI-130 series foams and BioPad are the flat-pad alternatives with ten times the VpCI loading of paper; VpCI-101 and VpCI-111 are the self-stick emitters for electrical cabinets. Field notes

A Milwaukee, Wisconsin motorcycle plant had rust in manufacturing, in international shipment of semi-assembled machines and in service-parts storage. VpCI-126 bags now line the Gaylord boxes, VpCI-146 paper interleaves the parts and VpCI-132 foam emitters complete the pack, with Cor-Pak 1-MUL pouches for long-term service parts; the program went plant-wide. (Cortec Case History #546)

A Louisiana shipyard needed 4 to 6 weeks of internal protection for a hydraulic tank but could not compatibility-test a liquid rust preventive against the customer’s fluid in the 7 days available, and the tank would be welded, not cleaned, before filling. VpCI-308 pouches tethered inside during shipping and welding, removed before fill, delivered it rust-free. (Cortec Case History #774)

A Grand Rapids, Michigan mold shop shipped a 40,000 lb two-cavity P20 injection mold to Europe needing 5 to 6 weeks of protection: mold set on a cut sheet of MilCorr, cavity and core lightly sprayed with EcoAir tool-and-die rust preventive, one VpCI-309 pouch inside, then closed, locked and shrink-wrapped. No corrosion, and the cost was about half that of grease or oil. (Cortec Case History #626)
