Description

VpCI®-326 is an oil-based additive concentrate that upgrades the hydraulic, lubricating or preservative oil already in a system for standby and shutdown periods. It is the Cortec oil additive that will pass through a 1-micron filter, so it can go into hydraulic circuits with fine filtration without plugging elements. It is NATO and NSN listed, nitrite-free, thermally stable and has an exceedingly high flash point for in-plant safety.

Hydraulic systems that sit idle corrode above the fluid line in the reservoir, in cylinders parked with rod retracted and in valve bodies where moisture collects. VpCI-326 protects ferrous and non-ferrous metals in both the liquid and the vapor phase, and it can also be fogged into the interior of drained reservoirs and housings at 1 fl oz per cubic foot. It carries NSN 6850-01-470-3358 and NATO stock number 6850-66-132-6100 and is a commercial equivalent to MIL-PRF-46002C and MIL-I-85062. In the Cortec Product Consultation Guide VpCI-326 is rated 3, outside sheltered storage, on carbon steel, stainless steel, cast iron, aluminum alloys, galvanized steel, copper, brass and solder; it is not intended for uncovered outdoor exposure.

Typical applications

  • Hydraulic oil systems
  • Gearbox assemblies
  • Fogging interiors of enclosed spaces
  • Upgrading existing lubricants for standby and shutdown periods
  • Servo and proportional-valve hydraulic circuits with 1-micron filtration
  • Hydraulic power units on mobile, marine and defense equipment
  • Circulating oil systems being prepared for seasonal shutdown
  • Drained reservoirs and housings preserved by fogging

How to apply VpCI-326

  1. Check compatibility. Cortec’s oil compatibility chart lists VpCI-326 as compatible at 10 % in the gear, transmission and turbine oils it has tested, and as not compatible with one synthetic gear oil. Blend a sample of your fluid before dosing.
  2. Dose the system. Add VpCI-326 to the reservoir at 5 to 20% by weight (Cortec Technical Service; use the high end of the range for longer lay-up or harsher conditions), then cycle the system so the treated oil reaches every circuit. Because it passes a 1-micron filter there is no need to bypass filtration.
  3. Wet or dry lay-up. Leave the treated fluid in place or drain it; the vapor phase inhibitors continue to protect the drained interior.
  4. Fogging. For drained reservoirs, gearboxes and housings, seal all but two openings and fog VpCI-326 through the low port at 1 fl oz per cubic foot (1 liter per cubic meter) of enclosed space until mist reaches the exhaust port, cap the exhaust, complete the dose and seal.
  5. Return to service. No removal or flush is required.
  6. Storage. Keep sealed and mix before use.

Compatibility

VpCI-326 works in mineral and synthetic hydraulic and lubricating oils. Cortec’s oil compatibility chart shows it compatible at 10 % in the gear, transmission and turbine oils tested and not compatible with one synthetic gear oil, so a blend test is the rule for any fluid not on the chart. See the full oil and elastomer compatibility charts.

Where it fits in the Cortec line

VpCI-326 is the hydraulic specialist. VpCI-329 is the general-purpose oil concentrate with adjustable 1:19, 1:9 and 1:4 ratios for gearboxes and crankcases; VpCI-322 is the fixed 1:9 concentrate rated 24 months for pumps, compressors and gearboxes in lay-up. For turbine and gear oils where demulsibility and a non-staining film matter, use M-531; for engine oils in intermittent service, M-529. Browse the full Cortec VpCI line.

Field notes

A private pilot in Oshkosh, Wisconsin winterized the 180 hp engine of a restored 1965 amphibious airplane per the engine maker’s service letter: 26 oz of VpCI-326 in 8 quarts of oil (1:10), the engine run briefly and shut down, with extra mix sprayed into the cylinders after five months. (Cortec Case History #254)

A state-owned deepwater drilling contractor in Vietnam cold-stacked a rig with a full treatment schedule: VpCI-326 and VpCI-329 at 20% and M-531 at 5% in gearboxes, mud pumps and engines; VpCI-705 at 100 ppm in fuel; VpCI-649 BD at 0.5% in fresh-water systems; and VpCI-308 and VpCI-609 fogged into empty tanks and pipelines. (Cortec Case History #575)

A French gear-reducer maker had precision reducers rusting in shipment, and filling the cases with oil was costly and shipped as hazardous freight. VpCI-329 is now poured into the gearcase at only 0.3% of case volume, with CorShield VpCI-369 on the exterior: up to 48 months of protection, no oil fill and non-hazardous freight. (Cortec Case History #599)
