Description

VpCI®-143 paper emitters are one-inch squares of 42 lb linerboard coated on both sides with Cortec’s vapor-phase corrosion inhibitor, packed 1,000 to a bag and 25 bags to the carton. Each square protects up to 25 cubic inches (410 cm³) of enclosed space, which makes it the emitter for places nothing else fits: inside a small carton or clamshell, in a hardware bag, in a valve body, a housing or a compartment inside a larger component. The coating on both faces vaporizes quickly to charge the small void and gives contact protection where the chip touches metal, and there is nothing to remove before the part goes into service.

VpCI-143 is a multimetal paper emitter for ferrous and non-ferrous parts in enclosed packaging. It is not named in the Cortec Product Consultation Guide matrix, but every Cortec emitter device listed there (VpCI-101, the 130-series foams, BioPad, Cor-Pak tablets) carries rating 1, enclosed, and the squares are used the same way: in non-ventilated housings, small boxes and packages closed with cardboard, paper, plastic wrap or a metal container. It needs a closed space to work and is not for open storage. It replaces a dab of grease or oil in a small assembly, and it replaces the tiny desiccant sachet in a hardware bag with something that actually stops corrosion rather than slowing it. Cortec’s coated papers are made from neutral natural kraft and contain no fluorochemicals, nitrites, phosphates, silicones, chromates or heavy metals.

How to use VpCI-143

  1. Prepare the parts. Parts should be clean, dry and at room temperature with no standing water or coolant.
  2. Count the squares. One square per 25 in³ (410 cm³) of enclosed space. A 3″ × 3″ × 3″ box (27 in³) takes one; a 6″ × 4″ × 2″ box (48 in³) takes two; a 12″ × 12″ × 12″ carton (1,728 in³) would take 70, at which point a VpCI-132 foam pad or a BioPad is the better emitter.
  3. Place. Drop the squares into the package, or into the compartment or cavity of the component, so they share air space with the metal. Placement is not critical; the vapor migrates to every surface in the closed space.
  4. Close the package. Tape the carton, close the VpCI-126 zip bag or snap the clamshell. The vapor concentration only builds in a closed space.
  5. Let the vapor work. Protection lasts as long as the package stays closed. If it is opened and left open, add a fresh square when it is closed again.
  6. Use the part. No removal required before further use; the squares can stay in the component or go in the recycling with the carton.
  7. Store the squares. Keep unopened bags sealed; open only the bag in use and reseal it between shifts.

Combining with other VpCI packaging

A square inside a 3.25″ × 5″ VpCI-126 zip bag is the standard small-hardware package: the film protects what it touches and the square charges the air in the bag. For a small carton, line it with a 6″ × 6″ VpCI-146 sheet and add a square for the void. For static-sensitive components use EcoSonic VpCI-125 ESD bags instead. Where it fits in the Cortec line

VpCI-143 is the bottom rung of the emitter ladder at 25 in³. Next up are VpCI-136 and adhesive-backed VpCI-133 1″ × 1″ foam squares at 0.25 ft³ (432 in³) each, Cor-Pak tablets at 0.25 ft³, VpCI-101 at 1 ft³, then the VpCI-131 (1.5 ft³) and VpCI-132 (8 ft³) foam pads, BioPad and BioBoard.
