Description

BioBoard™ is Cortec’s biobased, fully recyclable VpCI® emitter board: a flat paperboard emitter made from renewable and recycled materials and loaded with vapor-phase corrosion inhibitor. This listing is the 4″ × 5″ board, 250 per carton, the small size for parts boxes, hardware kits and small bags. Drop it into a closed carton, tote or enclosure and the inhibitor vaporizes, saturates the air in the package and condenses as a molecular layer on every metal surface inside. The parts come out ready to use with nothing to clean, and the board goes in the recycling stream with the carton instead of the landfill with a foam pad.

BioBoard protects ferrous and non-ferrous metals in enclosed packaging. It is newer than the matrix in the Cortec Product Consultation Guide, but every Cortec emitter device listed there (VpCI-101, the 130-series foams, BioPad, Cor-Pak tablets and pouches) carries rating 1, enclosed, and BioBoard is used the same way: in non-ventilated equipment housings, control boxes or packages closed with cardboard, paper, plastic wrap or a metal container. It needs an enclosure to work; it is not for open shelves or uncovered storage. It replaces polyurethane foam emitters where a recyclable or biobased material is specified, and it replaces the oil dip and the desiccant pack for parts that ship in closed boxes. Cortec publishes no protected-volume figure for BioBoard; size it by comparison with the foam and BioPad emitters below, and ask us or Cortec for a recommendation on a specific package.

Typical applications

  • Enclosed cartons, crates and totes of ferrous and non-ferrous parts
  • Bins of in-process parts waiting between operations
  • Hardware, fastener and spare-parts kits
  • Electrical enclosures and control boxes that stay closed
  • Export packaging where a recyclable, biobased emitter is specified
  • Sustainable and recyclable packaging programs replacing polyurethane foam emitters

How to use BioBoard

  1. Prepare the parts. Parts should be clean, dry and at room temperature with no standing water; do not pack wet parts and expect the emitter to dry them.
  2. Choose the size. The 4″ × 5″ board is the size for a small parts box, a kit bag or a compartment; use the 8″ × 12″ board for a full carton, tote or enclosure. Placement is not critical as long as the board shares air space with the metal; for a large or divided package use several boards spaced through the load.
  3. Place and close. Lay the board in the package with the parts and close the package: tape the carton, seal the VpCI-126 bag or liner, or latch the enclosure. The vapor concentration only builds in a closed space.
  4. Let the vapor work. Protection lasts as long as the package stays closed. If a package is opened and left open for long periods, or a part is pulled and the box left unsealed, add a fresh board when it is closed again.
  5. Unpack and use. Remove the part; no cleaning or coating removal is required.
  6. Dispose. Fully recyclable with the paper and board in the package.
  7. Store the boards. Keep unused boards sealed in their original packaging; an open bag of emitters is spending its inhibitor on the stockroom.

Combining with other VpCI packaging

A BioBoard does its best work inside a sealed VpCI enclosure: a VpCI-126 zip bag, a 126 gusseted liner or a carton lined with VpCI-146 paper, where the film or paper protects the surfaces it touches and the board charges the void between them. Where trapped humidity is the driver, add a Desicorr VpCI pouch. Parts should be clean and dry before they are packed; see Build-All and Magido aqueous parts washers.

Where it fits in the Cortec line

Cortec’s emitter ladder runs from VpCI-101 (1 ft³, self-stick, for control boxes) and VpCI-111 (11 ft³ cup) through the antistatic VpCI-131 (1.5 ft³) and VpCI-132 (8 ft³) foam pads, the biobased non-woven BioPad (2″ × 6″ at 1.5 ft³, 8″ × 8″ at 8 ft³) and Cor-Pak tablets (0.25 ft³ each). BioBoard is the paperboard member of that family: biobased and recyclable like BioPad, flat and rigid enough to slide into a carton wall or a kit box. VpCI-143 paper squares cover the very small end (25 in³ each). Two stock sizes are listed here, 4″ × 5″ and 8″ × 12″; Cortec makes custom sizes on request.
