Description
VpCI®-609 S is the silica-containing grade of VpCI-609, Cortec’s water-soluble vapor phase corrosion inhibitor powder for ferrous metals and aluminum. The silica is there to reduce clumping in storage so the powder flows freely through a blast pot or vacuum when fogged; the inhibitor chemistry, metals and dosages are those of VpCI-609. The 100 lb drum fogs 3,200 to 5,300 cubic feet of void.
Cortec’s powder fogging guide names VpCI-609 S alongside VpCI-308 S and VpCI-309 as the versions formulated with silica to resist clumping, and notes that clumps in any powder do not reduce efficacy but do have to be broken apart before fogging. Cortec’s VpCI-609/609 S data sheet gives the S grade its own pH (5.9 to 6.9) and bulk density but shares one dosage table, so the figures on this page are the VpCI-609 figures: 0.3 to 0.5 oz per cubic foot dry, 4 to 8 % in hydrotest water, up to 24 months of protection, and the same caution from the Cortec Product Consultation Guide not to use it with copper or brass. Confirm any figure that matters to a specification against the current VpCI-609 S product data sheet.

How to apply VpCI-609 S
- Surface preparation. SSPC-SP-1: clean and, for dry fogging, completely dry.
- Dry fogging. Break up any clumps. With a gravity-fed sandblaster at 60 to 100 psi and a 1/4 to 3/8 inch nozzle, or a shop vacuum set to blow, fog 0.3 to 0.5 oz per cubic foot (300 to 500 g/m³) into an enclosure sealed to two openings. Fog until powder exits the second opening, cap it, finish the dose and seal the inlet. Powder travels up to 100 feet through piping.
- Wet use. Dissolve at 4 to 8 % by weight in hydrotest or standing water as for VpCI-609. Hold at hydrotest pressure for at least an hour, drain, and close the vessel without air-drying or purging.
- Protection. Up to 24 months sealed. For longer, install coupons at the entry port and re-dose as needed.
- Return to service. Water-soluble; a rinse or the first fill removes it.
- Storage. Keep the moisture-barrier bag sealed inside the drum.
Where it fits in the Cortec line
Buy VpCI-609 S when the powder will be fogged through equipment and free flow matters; buy standard VpCI-609 for dissolving in hydrotest water. Field notes
A Barcelona shipyard treats the unpaintable void spaces of a superyacht with VpCI-609 S fogged through a few access points, corrosion coupons hung inside and flanges closed. With coupons still clean at 12 months, the reapplication interval was extended to 24 months; each treatment takes two days or less. (Cortec Case History #801)
An Indonesian fabricator of reactors, vessels, columns and drums ran VpCI-649 BD at 0.5% in hydrotest water and then applied VpCI-609 at 400 g per m³ to all equipment for six months of protection through shipping and storage. The fabricator dropped its nitrogen purge. (Cortec Case History #698)
A Saudi steel fabricator needed up to two years of protection on new pressure-vessel internals through transit and site storage. VpCI-609 is fogged in with compressed air at 500 g per m³ of void space and the inlets and outlets sealed; no corrosion problems since adoption. (Cortec Case History #558)
