SKU: CORTEC-13900001 Categories: ,

Description

VmCI-307 is Cortec’s multi-metal vapor corrosion inhibitor powder for recessed areas, interior cavities and voids, the workhorse for tank bottoms, pipe interiors and equipment lay-up. Dust it, sprinkle it or fog it into a sealed space at 0.3 to 0.5 oz per cubic foot and it protects ferrous and non-ferrous metals for up to 24 months. It is a commercial equivalent to MIL-I-22110C. The 5 lb pail treats 160 to 265 cubic feet of void.

Of the four Cortec fogging powders, VmCI-307 is the low-solubility, low-depletion-rate, multi-metal choice: it releases its vapor slowly, so it lasts in large or imperfectly sealed enclosures, and it is safe on copper and brass as well as steel. It is nitrite- and chromate-free. In the Cortec Product Consultation Guide VmCI-307 is rated 3, outside sheltered storage, on carbon steel, stainless steel, cast iron, aluminum alloys, galvanized steel, copper, brass and solder, which makes it the powder for mixed-metal assemblies such as heat exchangers and pumps. It carries NSN 6850-01-632-7695. Cortec spells the name VmCI, Vapor multi-metal Corrosion Inhibitor.

Typical applications

  • Bottom plate protection of aboveground petroleum storage tanks
  • Tubular structures, pipes and vessels
  • Interiors of compressors, turbines, engines, tanks, boilers and heat exchangers
  • Dry lay-up of closed circuit cooling systems
  • Equipment protection after hydrostatic testing
  • Mixed-metal assemblies with copper or brass components
  • Sprinkled into crates and boxes of parts before sealing
  • Fogged into pipelines and tubulars before capping for storage

How to apply VmCI-307

  1. Surface preparation. SSPC-SP-1: clean of grease, oil, corrosion and foreign matter, and completely dry.
  2. Break up clumps. Powders tend to clump in storage. Clumps do not reduce efficacy but must be broken apart so the powder disperses.
  3. Equipment. For fogging use a gravity-fed sandblaster at 60 to 100 psi with a 1/4 to 3/8 inch nozzle, or a shop vacuum set up to blow. Test that the powder is being dispersed into the air in sufficient quantity before starting.
  4. Seal the enclosure. Cover all but two openings, a low inlet and a high exhaust or the reverse, using pipe caps, CorrCaps or MilCorr shrink film.
  5. Fog. Dose at 0.3 to 0.5 oz per cubic foot of void (300 to 500 g/m³); Cortec’s fogging guide works to about 0.5 oz/ft³. Fog until powder begins to exit the second opening, cap the exhaust, continue to the full dose and seal the inlet. The powder travels up to 100 feet through piping, including bends; fog complex systems section by section, with a fan or vacuum at the exhaust if needed.
  6. Dust or sprinkle. For crates, small tanks and open cavities, sprinkle the same 0.3 to 0.5 oz/ft³ over the bottom and internal surfaces, then close the enclosure.
  7. Protection. Up to 24 months in a sealed space. Avoid water ingress through seals or vents. For longer terms install corrosion coupons at the entry port, inspect every one to two years and re-dose with VmCI-307.
  8. Return to service. Recover loose powder at the exhaust port with a vacuum when the enclosure is opened.
  9. Storage. Keep containers sealed and dry.

Where it fits in the Cortec line

Pick VmCI-307 when the assembly mixes steel with copper or brass and the enclosure is large. VpCI-309 is the ferrous-only powder with the same low depletion rate; VpCI-609 is the water-soluble, high-volatility powder that also doses hydrotest water, but it is not for copper or brass. VpCI-308 pouches deliver a multi-metal powder without fogging, one pouch per 35 ft³. For a liquid fog, VpCI-337 doses at 0.5 to 1 oz/ft³. For small sealed packages, Cor-Pak 1-MUL pouches and VpCI-101 emitters are simpler. Browse the full Cortec VpCI line.

Field notes

Two land rigs in Iraq were stacked for shipment home by the drill crew: VmCI-307 inside major equipment for mixed-metal internals, VpCI-309 mixed with water and flushed through the mud tanks, VpCI-609 in ferrous piping, VpCI-368 on exposed metal, VpCI-369 on rotating equipment and VpCI-111 emitters in cabinets. (Cortec Case History #633)

A Saudi steel fabricator needed up to two years of protection on new pressure-vessel internals through transit and site storage. VpCI-609 is fogged in with compressed air at 500 g per m³ of void space and the inlets and outlets sealed; no corrosion problems since adoption. (Cortec Case History #558)

An Indonesian fabricator of reactors, vessels, columns and drums ran VpCI-649 BD at 0.5% in hydrotest water and then applied VpCI-609 at 400 g per m³ to all equipment for six months of protection through shipping and storage. The fabricator dropped its nitrogen purge. (Cortec Case History #698)
