Description
Cor-Pak® VpCI® Bubbles is Cortec’s patented bubble cushioning made from VpCI-126 film: a 39″ × 328′ roll of 4 mil bubble wrap that guards the part against corrosion and against impact in the same wrap. The bubble layer absorbs the knocks of handling and transit, and the film it is made from releases vapor-phase corrosion inhibitor that condenses on every metal surface inside the package. Parts come out clean, undamaged and ready to use, with nothing to degrease.
Cor-Pak bubbles protect carbon steel, aluminum, copper, brass, silver and stainless steels. In the Cortec Product Consultation Guide the product is rated 2, inside storage, on carbon steel, stainless steel, cast iron, aluminum alloys, galvanized steel, copper, brass and solder: use it for enclosed packaging, uncovered indoor storage and shipment inside a carton, crate or container. It replaces plain bubble wrap plus a separate oiling, VCI paper or bagging step, and it addresses the failure Cortec’s field trials keep pointing to: a VCI bag that tore because a heavy or sharp part was not cushioned. It is non-toxic and recyclable. A Cor-Pak VpCI Static Dissipative Bubbles version, made from VpCI-125 ESD film in the same 39″ × 328′ roll, is available for sensitive electronics.
Typical applications
- Cushioning finished machined surfaces, ground shafts and polished parts
- Wrapping precision components, gauges, tooling and instruments
- Void fill and dunnage in cartons and crates of metal parts
- Interleaving between heavy parts stacked in a tote or on a pallet
- Padding sharp edges and corners before a part goes into a VpCI-126 bag or shrink film
- Protecting spare parts and repair kits in transit to the field
- Packaging automotive, aerospace and defense components with mixed metals
- Electrical and electronic hardware (specify the static-dissipative version for static-sensitive boards)
How to use Cor-Pak VpCI Bubbles
- Prepare the parts. Parts must be clean, dry and at room temperature, with no standing water, cutting fluid or fingerprints on the metal.
- Cut and wrap. Cut a length from the 39″ roll that goes around the part with a few inches of overlap. Wrap with the bubbles against the part where the surface is finished or delicate, keep the wrap one layer thick against the metal where possible, and fold the ends over. Cut strips to pad edges, corners and protrusions on larger parts.
- Tape. Tape the wrap closed with VpCI Protected tape or plain packing tape; tape onto the film, not onto the metal.
- Enclose. Bubble wrap is not a sealed package. Put the wrapped part into a VpCI-126 bag, a VpCI-126 lined carton or a shrink-wrapped crate and close it; the outer film is what holds the vapor concentration.
- Let the vapor work. Inside the closed package the VpCI from the bubble film and the outer bag condenses as a molecular layer on every metal surface, including surfaces the wrap does not touch. Protection lasts as long as the package stays closed.
- Add an inhibitor source for large voids. In a large crate or for storage at the long end of the range, add a VpCI-130-series foam pad, a BioPad or a VpCI-101 emitter.
- Unpack and dispose. Unwrap and use the part; there is no residue. The film is polyethylene and recyclable.
- Store the packaging. Keep the roll in its original packaging, indoors, out of direct sunlight, at ambient temperature.
Combining with other VpCI packaging
Cor-Pak bubbles are the cushioning layer in a Cortec package, not the enclosure. The standard system is bubbles around the part, a VpCI-126 bag or gusseted liner around the carton or pallet, and for long storage a VpCI-132 foam pad or BioPad in the void. Use VpCI-146 paper or Cor-Pak EX where a thin interleaf is all that is needed and cushioning is not. For loads too heavy for a bubble film, wrap in EcoWeave. Mark the finished package with VpCI Protected labels. Parts should be clean and dry before they are wrapped; see Build-All and Magido aqueous parts washers.
Where it fits in the Cortec line
Cor-Pak VpCI Bubbles is one of several Cor-Pak cushioning and dunnage products, alongside CorrNetting (extruded VpCI mesh sleeves for shafts and machined parts) and Cor-Pak Corrugated PE sheeting for fabricated totes. The enclosure films are VpCI-126 Blue for indoor storage up to five years and MilCorr shrink film for outdoor lay-up; Cor-Pak stretch film unitizes the pallet. For ESD-sensitive electronics specify Cor-Pak VpCI Static Dissipative Bubbles (VpCI-125 film) or EcoSonic VpCI-125 HP bags. The VpCI product selection guide covers the whole packaging line.
Field notes
An Ohio can maker wrapped and banded sheared tinplate by hand until a trial on an 1,840 lb load: a 1 mil Cor-Pak top sheet, then 50 machine wraps of 2 mil Cor-Pak VpCI stretch film in under 3 minutes using 18 oz of film. The load passed forklift tilt, emergency-stop and 45-degree tip tests and a multi-stop truck delivery with no slippage and no rust. (Cortec Case History #200)
A Wisconsin aerosol filler found steel cans arriving in plain stretch film rusted at the neck within its 4 to 8 week lead time, ruining the seal. Incoming pallets are stripped and rewrapped in Cor-Pak VpCI stretch film, and the cans keep a year or more. (Cortec Case History #384)
A Detroit automaker’s steering gear and axle parts rusted on the way to Mexico despite oil plus a competitor’s VCI paper. Lining the steel shipping bins with VpCI-126 film and interleaving the layers with Cor-Pak VpCI film kept them rust-free from damp Michigan through hot, humid transit, with reusable packaging.
