Description

EcoClean® 423 puts Cortec’s VpCI®-423 organic rust remover gel into a 16 fl oz (0.47 L) bottle, twelve to a carton, for toolboxes, maintenance carts and spot rust repair. The thixotropic gel clings where you put it, uses natural organics to lift rust, scale and oxides from steel, iron, copper, brass and chrome, and rinses clean with water. It is a USDA Certified Biobased Product with 91% biobased content, non-toxic, biodegradable and non-flammable.

The bottle is the point-of-use format of the VpCI-423 gel: a rusted bolt head, a bloom on a machine way, a stained brass fitting, the corner of a panel that was scratched in transit. Because it is a gel it stays on vertical and overhead spots without running, and because it carries VpCI inhibitors it is not aggressive to the base metal and prevents flash corrosion while it works. It will not harm skin, most paints, plastics or rubber, so it can be used on assembled equipment. EcoClean bottles contain no aerosol propellant, CFCs or HCFCs and no 1,1,1-trichloroethane, methylene chloride or chlorinated solvents; the product is non-hazardous for transport, has no storage or fire-insurance restrictions, and ships by air freight or any conventional method. Like bulk VpCI-423 it is not recommended for aluminum. How to apply EcoClean 423

1. Pre-clean. Brush off loose, flaky rust and wipe away grease so the gel reaches the metal.
2. Apply a generous coat of gel to the rusted area with the bottle or a brush.
3. Keep it wet. Allow it to work; light rust releases in about 15 minutes, heavier rust takes longer. Do not let the gel dry. Cover with plastic film on long dwell times and agitate with a brush to speed removal.
4. Rinse. Wipe or rinse with water to remove dissolved rust and residual gel.
5. Neutralize and protect. Fresh steel flash rusts quickly. Spray with EcoSpray VpCI-416 and let it dry, or apply a VpCI rust preventative such as EcoAir VpCI-377 for indoor storage.
6. Storage. Store like any non-aerosol cleaner at room temperature. Do not let the product freeze.

Where it fits in the Cortec line

EcoClean 423 is the bottle-size arm of the VpCI-423 gel; step up to the 5-gallon pail for press frames, tanks and large gears. Field notes

Severe rust on the machined mounting pads of gas-turbine base plates would have prevented seating and caused vibration. VpCI-423 gel was left to dwell and cleaned off with 10% VpCI-414, about one hour per plate with 15 to 20 minutes hands-on, removing all corrosion in far fewer man-hours than grinding. A Houston air-cooler manufacturer found its nitrogen-purged bundles leaked as the steel blinds contracted in temperature swings. It switched to fogging VpCI-337 into the bundles and sealing with PVC bumper gaskets, with flange faces de-rusted with VpCI-423 gel, degreased with VpCI-414 and sprayed with CorShield VpCI-368. A St. Paul, Minnesota plastics molder had machine cooling chambers nearly closed off by rust. The chambers were cleared by circulating an 8% descaler for about three hours, corroded parts dipped in VpCI-422 and VpCI-423 for eight hours and rinsed, then sprayed with EcoSpray VpCI-389 for a waxy protective film that also eased reinsertion.
