Description
Steel grit is the abrasive of choice for blast rooms and airless wheel blasters: angular particles of heat-treated steel act like thousands of tiny chisels for fast descaling, rust and paint removal, and they leave the anchor profile new coatings need. It is the preferred media of foundries and structural steel fabricators and the one that pays back a mechanical recovery floor fastest, because it recycles hundreds of times. Often blended with steel shot for a specific finish. Supplied by Solvent Recycling Systems in 55 lb bags, 40-bag skids and 1,700 lb drums.

Hardness Grades
| Grade | Form | Use |
|---|---|---|
| GH | Stays angular | Hardest; does not shatter easily and keeps cutting: deep descaling, surface etching, epoxy removal, stone work; wheel blasters and pressure systems |
| GL | Edges round in use | High durability; fast cleaning, heavy descaling and surface preparation before coating; equally suited to wheel-blast machines |
| GP | Becomes spherical | Rounds quickly in use; effective for descaling |

Technical Data
Chemistry: C 0.85–1.2%, Mn 0.62–1.2%, Si 0.4–1.2%, S ≤ 0.05%, P ≤ 0.05%. Microstructure: homogeneous tempered martensite or troosite. Steel grit works best in tumblast where the eccentric rebound aids coverage; in air-blast use the high-hardness GH grade for fastest cleaning.

Applications
Blast cleaning of mill scale, rust and old paint; surface preparation before painting; descaling forgings, stampings, drawn and rolled parts and heat-treated parts; parts restoration; granite cutting in multi-blade frames. Steel grit calls for a blast room with a mechanical (screw) recovery floor, a pressure pot and rubber-lined walls; see the blast room quote checklist. Blasted steel flash-rusts within hours; follow with a Cortec VpCI rust preventative if paint is not immediate.
