Description

EcoPouch® is Cortec’s biodegradable powder pouch for large voids: a 6″ × 10″ × ½″ breathable Tyvek® pouch of VpCI®-609 Bio powder that protects up to 1 cubic meter (35 ft³) of enclosed space for up to 24 months. Drop it into a pipe run, a valve body, a boiler drum, a crate or a wrapped module and the vapor-phase inhibitor spreads to every ferrous and aluminum surface in the sealed space; there is no fogging equipment, no concentration to calculate and no dust on the parts, and the powder itself is 100% biodegradable in the marine environment.

EcoPouch carries the same VpCI-609 chemistry Cortec sells as a powder for hydrotesting and dry lay-up, in a non-dusting form for spaces where loose powder is not acceptable. It protects carbon steel, mild steel, stainless steel and other ferrous metals and aluminum. It is the wrong pouch for copper and brass: the Cortec Product Consultation Guide rates EcoPouch VpCI-609 Bio at 4 on ferrous metals, aluminum and galvanized steel and carries an explicit do-not-use caution on copper and brass; for mixed-metal systems with yellow metals use the VpCI-308 pouch instead. The powder has very low toxicity and no bioaccumulation potential, which matters for offshore and marine preservation where the pouch may end up in the environment. Cortec’s outdoor-storage recipe for large process equipment is EcoPouches or VpCI-308/309 pouches, chosen by metal type, placed in the voids, with the whole module shrink-wrapped in MilCorr or VpCI-126 HP UV.

Typical applications

  • Tubular structures, pipes and vessels
  • Parts and assemblies in shipping and storage
  • Turbine storage and transport
  • Offshore equipment
  • Oil and gas asset preservation
  • Boiler drums, chillers and heat-exchanger voids during lay-up
  • Crated machinery and export modules under shrink film
  • Tanks and voids where loose powder or fogging is not practical

How to use EcoPouch

  1. Start with clean, dry surfaces. Drain, blow down and dry the vessel or clean and dry the parts; a pouch cannot remove standing water or process residue.
  2. Size the dose. One pouch per 1 m³ (35 ft³) of void: a 4′ × 4′ × 4′ crate (64 ft³) takes two, a 20-foot container about 30. For long pipe runs place a pouch every few meters or at each capped end; for large vessels spread pouches through the space so the vapor reaches every section. Use two per volume for aggressive marine or overseas conditions.
  3. Confirm the metals. Ferrous metals and aluminum only; do not use EcoPouch where copper, brass or bronze components share the enclosure. Use VpCI-308 there.
  4. Place without opening. Lay, hang or tie the pouch inside the enclosure where it stays dry and can be retrieved later.
  5. Seal. Close every opening with pipe caps, blind flanges, MilCorr shrink film or VpCI-126 bags; the sealed space is what holds the vapor concentration.
  6. Allow the void to saturate. The inhibitor charges the air space and condenses as a molecular layer on every surface. Protection is up to 24 months in a sealed enclosure; periodic checks once or twice a year are enough.
  7. Return to service. Remove the pouches; no cleaning or degreasing is required.
  8. Store unused pouches sealed. Keep the drum closed and below 150 °F (65 °C).

Combining with other VpCI packaging

For a preserved module the pouch handles the internal voids while the outside is wrapped: MilCorr for outdoor storage of a year or more, VpCI-126 HP UV where transparency matters, a VpCI-126 bag indoors. Electrical sections get VpCI-111 emitters or VpCI-170 tape. Where the same vessel is hydrotested first, VpCI-609 powder dissolved in the test water protects during and after draining and the pouch takes over for storage. For fogging very large or complex systems use loose VpCI-309 or liquid VpCI-337.

Where it fits in the Cortec line

Cortec’s insert ladder is dosed by volume: Cor-Pak tablets at 0.25 ft³ each, Cor-Pak 1-MUL pouches at 1 ft³, the Cor-Pak 8 ft³ pouch, and the 35 ft³ powder pouches, VpCI-308 for all metals including copper and bronze and EcoPouch (VpCI-609 Bio) for ferrous metals and aluminum. Desicorr VpCI adds desiccant capacity where humidity is the driver; the VpCI-130 series foams and BioPad are the flat-pad alternatives with ten times the VpCI loading of paper; VpCI-101 and VpCI-111 are the self-stick emitters for electrical cabinets. Field notes

An LNG compressor rotor in Kazakhstan, rusted after two months in a poorly sealed container, was de-rusted with EcoAir VpCI-423, neutralized with EcoAir VpCI-414, given a final clean with ElectriCorr VpCI-239 and coated with CorShield VpCI-369, with EcoPouches at one per m³ (35.3 ft³) as backup to the nitrogen blanket. Weekly nitrogen checks were no longer needed. (Cortec Case History #843)

An axial-compressor spare blade carrier in Kazakhstan rusted in an unprotected wooden crate outdoors. It was de-rusted with EcoAir VpCI-423, cleaned and neutralized with EcoAir VpCI-414, given a final clean with ElectriCorr VpCI-239 and wrapped in VpCI-126 HP UV with EcoPouches inside, ready for two years of outdoor crate storage. (Cortec Case History #841)

A Louisiana shipyard needed 4 to 6 weeks of internal protection for a hydraulic tank but could not compatibility-test a liquid rust preventive against the customer’s fluid in the 7 days available, and the tank would be welded, not cleaned, before filling. VpCI-308 pouches tethered inside during shipping and welding, removed before fill, delivered it rust-free. (Cortec Case History #774)
